Would this mix with the RTP?
« on: November 17, 2008, 04:37:08 PM »
Oh dear. This likely doesn't belong here but I have no idea where it would go. Sorry if this is a bad place for it.

Essentially I decided I liked the idea of using a show picture command in the beginning to show something that a character is doing but.. close up. Im a fairly bad artist. Okay. A really bad artist. I drew this today and then scanned it and went over it in GIMP. I don't think it looks all thaaaaaaaaaat bad, but I do think it looks extremely amateurish and though it may fit in a game with a more cartoony style it might not do well with the RTP. But it also might

or

So, say you were to see this show pictured in Enex2. Would the reaction be positive or negative? If negative I'll just scrap the idea of the picture show, for now at least.

Fitting with the RTP? Hell no.
But I like how it looks, excluding your question.

I'd probably give it a positive look, things like that help show exactly watch you mean sometimes. I think it mostly depends on how you deliver it.

It does look a bit cartoony. If you made it lengthier (less round), and put some sharper shading in there, it would look more serious. But you're not a bad artist, it looks good, but my hunch is it's not what you're looking for for your game.

And let me add that it looks like you used bevels. Never use bevels for art. It just looks... real bad. No offence.

Thanks for the honesty, I felt like it'd look pretty bad.

I have a couple of questions. First of all, what are bevels?

And I think what you said makes sense abigailan. Im going to take a break from it and go back to it later and see if I can fix it up a bit.

As you might have noticed, your character has a slight white "light simulation" on its leftmost edges and the upper part of his arm.
A bevel is when you take the top and left corner and add a highlight color, and take the bottom and right corner and add a shadow color.
Creates a 3-Dimensional effect. If you have the ability to see Windows Classic theme, check out the taskbar buttons and everything else in the theme.
Once NOT selected, there's a highlight bevel (to make it look like its sticking out), when selected there's a different bevel (opposite as before) to make it look like it's digging into the taskbar.

I made the shading sharper. I have yet to edit the fire. I think it looks a lot better now, but I'm not sure if it's completely ready.

I think if you made the head hole smaller, and more heavy looking, you're even closer. Much better though.

Thanks!

I was going a lot of looking over pixel work by other people and such and I realized I needed to use less different colors and be more distinct in the shading, and place it more carefully.

I still hope to improve a lot, especially when it comes to human anatomy (I can't draw any human features. Thank god this character is covered in a robe), so I'm going to try a lot of work in drawing hands and fingers (*shudder*).

I'm not going to use that previous picture, but I feel confidant using this one :)

By the way, I tried making a less dark version.

RMXP.org says it was too dark and they couldn't see much but just a pure black figure, so I made it contrast more. Do you think I should use the original one or the lighter version?
