Making games?
« on: July 05, 2014, 02:35:54 AM »
So... I've always wanted to be a game maker (English is not my primary language, I literaly learned it from Runescape  ) So far, I haven't found a guide that I could comprehend. I don't understand coding, scripting, what a sprite is, etc.

I don't understand coding, scripting, what a sprite is, etc. I want to know because there's quite a chance I won't make it to high school to learn game design. (Left my school where I could get my secondary diploma for high school, I'm in another school where you can't get it, so I'm going to do a program where you could get it by studying by yourself and do the exams somewhere else)

Hi Wuuuu,
Welcome,
First of all, what do you want to learn about making game ?
well, some of us (Or maybe most of us here that I know) we are using RPG Maker Software,
It's a really simple software that will help you to make your own game without have to understand a lot about coding and stuff (As long as you have the logic, it'll do just fine). and also it's easy enough to learn by your own, so it might be a good start.

So, Do you want to use RPG Maker for making your game ?

If you wanna a brief explanation about RPG Maker, read this one :
Spoiler: show

First of all, there are some RPG Maker Series  , here are some (Short) explanation about the series and what I know about it  (Ascending through series):

- Rpg Maker 2000 -
This is a classic style of rpg , the graphic is look's like Final fantasy 3/4/5/6, and the battle system look's like Dragon quest (You only can see the enemy

No Coding will be needed for this one

-Rpg Maker 2003-
Spoiler: show

Almost same like RPG Maker 2000, but this one you''ll find more option for making games and the battle system look's like final fantasy VI

No Coding will be needed for this one, so I'll really recommended this one for start without coding
You can play movie with this and the feature in this RPG Maker is the most complete beside all other (But you can't add another feature that you wish to add since you can't add coding in it), but the graphic is a little bit classic.

-RPG Maker XP-
Spoiler: show

The graphic pretty good, and It's the first time using ruby script (which is called RGSS 1), not much I can say with this one, since I'm not using this one .
If you wanna know the default character for this one, you can simply look at the emotiocon when you reply message here, that is the chara graphic for this one

You can code with this one

-RPG Maker VX-
Spoiler: show

This is what I use for making games, You can customize the character and It's using Scripting(Coding) Too for this one with RGSS 2
There are a lot I can say about this one, so if you wanna ask for this one and RPG Maker 2003 , just ask, I'll try to answer.

You can code with this one
The graphic for the character is looks like this one :
http://freebirdgames.com/forum/index.php?topic=5535.msg182877#new

And also this one was made with more Frame Per Second (FPS) Than Rpg Maker XP, Therefore the movement will be more smooth than XP

-RPG Maker VX Ace-
Spoiler: show

The latest version of RPG Maker series, this one looks like VX, just a little bit more feature. using RGSS 3 for script
Not much I can say since I'm never tried it yet before

If you wanna ask more specific question about RPG Maker, please go ahead, but I'm sure once you try it, You'll easily understand on your own :)
=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Note :
- English isn't my main language too, and I think I'll need some improvement too, so, yeah... let's learn together :)
- I think coding is same as scripting in the RPG Maker world
- RPG Maker using "Ruby Script language"
- Sprite is the picture of your character or something that can move in your game besides picture
- You can watch youtube to learn more or just explore from other games that was made from RPG maker (You have to install first though)

If you want to start learning how to make games outside of RPG Maker I would recommend trying out the free version of the Unity 3D Engine.

You have a choice between using Unityscript and C# for the programming and there are some fairly concise guides out there which I could link you to, all of which go through the basics of creating a game, step-by-step.

There are also a lot of free community assets out there, so if you are like me and your modelling skills are non-existent at best you can simply download some that fit the theme of your game.

If you are interested I'll look up some of the excellent videos which helped me during my university course.
