What did Johnny want from River? [SPOILERS]
« on: June 24, 2013, 10:44:05 PM »
After having beat the game and enjoying that bittersweet sorrow off an ending I'm left with one burning question:

What did Johnny want from River in high school? He wanted something from her other than just her and Nick thought he was being cold. Johnny later admitted this to River and it triggered her rabbit origami folding spree.

Did I miss something in the plot or did the creator leave this intentionally blank for us to fill in?

Whatever it was, it must have been pretty bad. River is one of the only characters to know the "real" Johnny and was trying to coax him out after?

What Johnny wanted was to be unique.

He had a complex about being a non-individual, probably because he was the lesser of two twins. He admits to this especially when he talks about how the sky is boring because all of the stars are the same or something, and how he hates his name because it's so common.

River represents something entirely interesting to him. Her name is strange, the way she acts is strange, etc. This is the reason he thinks he likes her in high school (and probably the reason he liked her so much when they were children on the log).

When he is talking to Nick, he's confessing that he doesn't like River for who she is, but rather because she makes him feel unique by being with her.

Of course, he comes to love her deeply as they get to know each other.

When he confesses this high school motivation to River later, she realizes that he has forgotten about their meeting on the log and tries to remind him that they didn't meet in high school--they met before that. Johnny believes his confession had a big effect on River--which it did--but it's not the effect he thinks.
