Are all doctors so cold?!?
« on: April 18, 2013, 02:15:13 AM »
Just played TTM last week, and got sore red eyes for the whole weekend. But here's an observation I make of the behavior of Neil and Eva: cold-hearted robots

Having accompanied some friends with parapagic conditions caused by some brain conditions, I was quite put off by the way some neural specialists discuss their patients' conditions in front of them. One of them could actually scoff to a patient's parents that "You should be happy if she can even talk...". Imagine then, my unhappiness at seeing this being reflected in a game: "Have you made sure the germs are sealed off?" - Neil, "Fully sealed and filtered; not like it'd matter to a dead man" - Rosalene

Had a profession which force them to encounter diseases everyday numbed them to the predicaments of their patients?

(1) Some are like your quote above this line. However, different people, even those of the same profession, have different breaking points. And when they do break, they break differently. Some may become numbed and unemphatic, others may actually become MORE sensitive to everything and possibly even be unable to face their profession again.

(2) Without reaching their breaking points, people are still different. What may pass off as insensitive (or even offensive) to some may mean nothing or be just mere fact-stating to others (e.g. your "You should be happy if she can even talk..." example). Even if one argues that the delivery of a certain sentence sounds more offensive than others (the "You should be happy" part of your example), it just points back to the fact that people are different for a lot of reasons (the most common example for this would be how one's life experiences influences his views and behavior).

For my own example, and possibly a case of inversion:

My counselor and psychiatrist often go out of their way to make their observations on me as clear of any possibly offensive implications as possible, chucking a disclaimer every 2 sentences or something. I, on the other hand, prefer they just spit out the terminologies/words to use. Of course, this paints me as being overly pessimistic, numb, among other negative words they and my parents could come up with. Not that I care.

TL;DR
Doctors are people, and people are different.

They are just used to those things, if you see them every day they lose impact or they have foudn a way to handle the impact (e.g. black humour).
Even if you are nothing more than a drop in a bucket...
Every drop leaves ripples.

Still, seeing this enacted in a game... kinda seems to me that the phenomenon's every where.

Hey kan, did you ever met a doctor that disses you off when they comment bout whatever ailments you have (if you have any), or did you just stereotyped Eva and Neil?

It depends on the person; for example, some police officers aren't particularly pleasant whilst others seem like pretty great people.
