This seems to help some people with the "RGSS player has stopped"-problem:

Add the game to DEP exceptions.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows-vista/change-data-execution-prevention-settings

Sometimes you can solve your problem by using the alternative control:
(like a bug at logs you want to jump over)
mouse instead of keyboard or the other way round.

Problems with fullscreen mode

Quote from: Metalschmitz
If you guys have an nvidia card with DSR activated, try removing all DSR resolutions from the nvidia system setting panel in the global tab. This worked for me. It seems that the games tries to pick a resolution above normal and runs into downsampled mode - which obvisously doesnt work.

Some people just had to turn off DSR in "Manage 3D settings" tab in the Nvidia Control Panel

Another way to change between full screen and windowed mode
If Alt+Enter doesn't work for you, you can try this:

Quote from: Quanyails;1842367319521499904
I was able to get the game running windowed on startup on Windows 10 by setting the value of the following file to 0: [set it to 1 if you want full screen instead]

C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Roaming\To the Moon - Freebird Games\window.txt

Fullscreen is stretched

Quote from: yoship;358417008729671382
[...] This is a really helpful tip and the only one that helped me escape the stretched full screen, since my monitor (and I suspect many) does not have an explicit option to set aspect-ratio and full-screen options when connected through HDMI cable. This game natively runs on 4:3 and when running on 16:9 (like 1920x1080) will probably appear stretched in full screen mode

To recap the steps, *if using an NVIDIA card*
1. Open NVIDIA control panel
2. On the left hand navigation pane, click Display > Adjust desktop size and position
3. Under 'Apply the following settings' > Scaling tab
4. Note/ write down the 3 options you are about to change, to revert whenever needed.
5. Set 'Aspect ratio' as scaling mode
6. Set to 'GPU' the 'perform scaling option' (this is in addition to original suggestion)
7. Set to checked the 'override the scaling mode set by games and programs'

Launch 'To the Moon' It should now in 4:3 in full-screen mode now if it previously wasn't. Hope it helps a few.

And even more fullscreen advice

Another way to achieve a kind of full screen is to open the task manager and to choose "applications" (windows 7) / "processes" (windows 8 and 10). Then rightclick and choose "maximize".

and even more about scaling/fullscreen (this time it was on windows 10)
Quote from: SouL Prisoner
1. In your steam librabry, right click on "To the moon" > Properties > Local files > Browse local files > Open To the moon folder > Right click To the Moon (launcher) > Properties > Compability > Tick " Disable display scaling on high DPI settings.

Please help, trying to run To The Moon on Steam.

my game is not starting. - Black screen of death, no matter what I tried (Tried ALL suggested solutions on this website and on the official steam forums)
What happens is... it forces to go to full screen after 1 second .... can not go out of black screen of death despite hearing my mp3 playing in the background....... ALT+F4 , CONTROL+ALT+DELETE , ALT+ENTER , WINDOWS BUTTON, ALT + TAB    all those are not working.   Just get a black screen, no in-game music......... only thing that helps is to reset.  OK, so I tried forcing it with Steam commands (-windowed)  to force-run it in windowed mode, but this also doesn't work. Trying to run it as administrator manually also doesn't work..... Tried running it in Compatibility mode , and tried forcing it to rn on 640x480  but both those options also didn't work..... Quite tired of keep force-restarting my PC and having to register on a forum to get this game to work... please help...... xxx thanks

Specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2  - 64 bit
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU  Q8300 @ 2.50 GHz
RAM: 4 GB
Resolution:  1024x768

I have 500 games on Steam, and none of the games give me any trouble but "to the moon" ... Personally I think it is a resolution problem, but I'm not sure now.....

Please help, trying to run To The Moon on Steam.

hello jossy!

I played TtM on my 15" 1024 x 768 monitor and it worked fine.

Does a message appear at all? Like an error message or anything?

There's a few things that I think it could be:
  • An issue between your monitor and your GPU; and/or
  • An issue with your steam installation; or
  • One of those silly things that happens because it's Windows (Vista)

For an issue with your steam install, just try reinstalling it via your steam client. I'd recommend doing this first as it's a really straightforward procedure.

For an issue between your monitor and your GPU, please advise what make and model your graphics card is - perhaps someone has encountered a similar problem using the same card. I take it you've already updated all the drivers for your card, right? This will rule out any device driver issues. If you have another monitor around, try plugging that one in and running TtM with it. I know this is kind of a long shot, but it makes sure it's nothing to do with your monitor directly.

I do not have a different monitor.
There are other users also experiencing the same issue as me, they're on the Steam Forums. The ones experiencing the exact same issue as me have not reached a solution yet either.

I re-installed Steam, that is not the problem. (As I also said I have 500 games, all of them run fine...)
I also have the latest drivers (january 2014) .  I've been unable to play this game for more than half a year.... (never got it to run but now I decided to sign up on the forum)

Finally, my video card is   an   Nvidia GeForce GT 120

The game starts for 1 second in windowed mode but then automatically goes straight into full screen and then the PC crashes in a black screen...... There is no message at all, only a black screen - only restarting the PC completely makes me "exit" this black screen.

Also,
I tried the DEP exception thing just now.... that doesn't work ... it doesn't give me a black screen of death but it says RGSS Player has stopped working right away and the game crashes right away....

Hi. Shot in the dark here, but try this. I remember encountering this back in 2009 and sadly, it went away as suddenly as it came. No errors, no resolution. Just came and went. I'm sorry that there hasn't been any concrete solution so far, even though this isn't the first time a similar complaint has been made here, outside the Steam forum.

Did you try this advice from the other thread?

It is a possibility that a required file for this game on the Windows O/S end of things has somehow gotten corrupted over time.

Running windows file checker wouldn't do any harm in making sure things are in order on the Operating System side of things.

Start -> run -> cmd -> right click cmd -> run as administrator
sfc /scannow

It's possible it may want to do it at the next boot due to some files already being active.

I have never played this game on the real Windows, so my suggestion may be stupid and have no effect at all, but have you tried temporarily moving RGSS102E.dll from the game folder to another folder, then download & install RPG Maker RTP from here:
http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/download/additional/run-time-packages/thankyou-rtp-xp
(I guess you they expect you to read their license agreement from here first:
http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/download/additional/run-time-packages )

After installing the RPG Maker RTP, try running To The Moon again, if the issue remains or it complains about the lack of RGSS102E.dll, copy RGSS104E.dll from Windows\System32 to your To The Moon directory, then rename RGSS104E.dll to RGSS102E.dll and try again.
I have seen posts made by people having troubles with RGSS104E.dll, they claimed by replacing it with RGSS102E.dll and just renaming RGSS102E.dll to RGSS104E.dll their issues were resolved, now that you seem to have issues with the RGSS102E.dll, maybe trying the opposite may have some effect!

BTW, I hope you did the suggested DEP exception setting for the correct game executable and you undid all your previous "Compatibility Mode", "640x480", etc. before trying again.

i did... im still pretty sure it's a resolution problem... since it's FORCING me to go full screen  no matter what steam commands I use and no matter how much I try to force the game into going into different resolutions  - it will only do it for 1 second (and seems to work)  and then go full screen which I can't leave (although my PC is still running) --

I had this happen only once before (with me many other people) at a very broken French/Japanese game (can't remember the name of the game but the game is complete shit anyway lol) and that was because the game was forcing you into a resolution which some monitors or video cards did not support....  it was fixable by actually editing the dll and ini files as well, so I'll give your suggestion a try.

OKAY I GOT IT FIXED  !!!

What I did was ... change monitor refresh settings from 75 Hz  to   85 Hz  ....

that was it...
took me 2 years to figure it out.

the only problem I have now is that the game is flickering  a bit  from left to right and up and down  but very minor....

Hello,

I'm on Windows 8.1 x64, I have the game in Steam and I tried to run To The Moon on 2 different PCs, one with AMD CPU and GPU, the other with an Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU - on both I get only the "RGSS Player has stopped working" issue directly on startup (https://i.imgur.com/H1xpavY.jpg). I added the DEP exception, rebooted, enabled admin privileges and tried all compatibility modes. No effect whatsoever.

I bought the game because I heard a lot of good things about it and now I'm super bummed out that I just cannot play it.

I have no idea what else to try. :(

If someone else still has any good ideas, please let me know!

Thanks.

Just wanted to let you guys know, that my problem is solved now! This user gave me the solution: http://steamcommunity.com/app/206440/discussions/0/630800447136351494/#c540740500557953833

If EMET is installed, it will override the system settings for DEP. So it's EMET where you'll have to disable it, then the game will work!

The game content itself is absolutely wonderful, I will never forget it! Thanks!
