Game Gimmick Game
« on: August 06, 2012, 07:10:36 PM »
This is a game of hypothetical good ideas.

Imagine you were part of a AAA game development team, and your team was making a game that was like basically every other game in its genre. However, you were in charge of the single deviation: a gimmick. Maybe this gimmick is brilliant and unique, or maybe it's simply the tool that will help the game stand out among other genres. That's up to you.

What type of gimmick would you insert in this game? (It can be any genre, so say what game it is and what the gimmick would be).

Ideas and examples of gimmicks:

Alternate Dimensions (Chrono Cross)
Free-roam Time Travel (Chrono Trigger, etc.)
World Swap (LoZ: A Link to the Past, LoZ: Ocarina of Time, etc.)
Giant Battle Robots (any Japanese thing... especially near the '80s)
Giant Slaying (Shadow of the Colossus)
Future Vision (Xenoblade)
Mask Collecting (Majora's Mask)
Transformation (Quintessence)

You get the point! Go nuts with it. :)

A few more examples:

Dimension shifting. (Quantum Conundrum)
Portals. (Well... Portal, duh)
Gravity manipulation. (Gravity rush)

What would I do? Probably the ability to switch between genres at any given time to help progress through the level.

A multi-player FPS game which has a unique mechanic effecting the game by only allowing people over it's legal purchasing age to play it??

How about your classic JRPG where the game keeps track of how many of each type of creature you've killed and adjusts the ecosystem accordingly? Like, if you kill too many wolves in the forest, after awhile you have too many deer. And if you fight lots of giant toads and birds, the villagers get plagued with an increase in insects and other small pests.

Death.
That's new.

Elaborate please! Since death is already quite a large staple in most games.

Like if you die you must start the game from the begining. ^^

That's been around forever also.

If you die, you must actually die in real life.

And if your Pokemon faints in battle, you must find a real pet of yours and dispose of it. (Like the nuzlocke reference, Jude? Do I get points?)

1st That's already in Sword Art Online series of novels
2nd When pokemon faint it's not death so you should just let your pet faint not kill it.

I am impressed you not only remembered about Nuzlocke but you also spelt it right.
