I was thinking more of a massive solar flare/something that we wouldn't be prepared for. Running out of fuel is another problem but there are more ways of creating electricity other than fuel (Hydroelectric, wind, nuclear etc) so it wouldn't be as bad.

Once nuclear fusion becomes a viable way of producing electricity there should be no reason for fuel shortages to effect us in any major way anyway. Unfortunately it will take over twenty years before it becomes a feasible source of energy.
