A few questions about the plot [spoiler warning]
« on: January 17, 2012, 03:59:28 PM »
Hi guys, I have a few questions about the game’s plot. There are some little things I didn’t understand well. It’d be nice of you to help me understand those parts. ^^

Let’s begin!

In the bar scene, Johnny talks about an incident. What is that incident (the one that caused River to start folding the paper rabbits)?
What disease did River suffer? (The one that caused her death.)
Is there any meaning to River cutting her hair?

That’s all for the moment. Sorry, the answers might seem obvious, but I might have missed something because the game’s in English. =/

01. The incident was the conversation Johnny and his friend discussed in high School. In the cafeteria, Johnny said that he wanted to be with River because he wanted to be with a unique person, so he could feel more unique. Later, he told River about that conversation. That's when she realized he didn't remember that they had met on the moon, and that's when she started folding bunnies. She thought that if she could remind Johnny about their promise to meet on the moon, he'd realize that he approached her because of that youthful meeting, not because she was unique.

02. An infected paper cut. Irony is a harsh mistress.

03. I think it was a compulsive expression of her need to make Johnny understand that she was having problems communicating with him. Much like the bunnies.

Sorry, I have one last question. I replayed the game and noticed a weird thing: it seems that Joey is the one to like pickled olives, not John. So why does the older John like them? ???

Spoiler: show
After Joey's death Johnny was kinda the replacement for Joey. It's a mix of handling the loss, the impact of the beta-blockers and the influence of his mum, who treated him like Joey. I don't know how realistic this is, but it may be possible.

Actually... The reason she cuts her hair is because she had short hair when they first met, and (If I remember this right... It's been a while since I played the game) he made some compliment, or nice remark, about her hair...

By the time you finish the game you can trace pretty much 2/3 of Rivers life to things Johnny told her when they first met... And you can pinpoint 2/3 of Johnny's to Joey, while the rest is a mix of the original Johnny and the things he talked with River when they first met too...

Great catch, Yoshi! That hadn't occurred to me. :)

I'm confused by the paper rabbits.

I get that the yellow and blue rabbit represented the
Spoiler: show
rabbit made of the moon and some stars...

but what were all the other rabbits supposed to represent?  Stars?  Or, I wondered if they were to do with Johnny's statement to River when she says that stars are balls of gas, and Johnny says he thinks that's a lie like adults tell - like the Easter Bunny...are the bunnies supposed to represent white lies?  Or am I overthinking this?  Was she simply trying to remind him of looking for rabbits in the stars?

Edit: Oh, and what about the yellow puffy paper rabbit, was that supposed to be different to the others?

02. An infected paper cut. Irony is a harsh mistress.

Is this a joke?  Or something that I missed?  I was assuming cancer.

Well let me explain this way as I get it:

They made the rabbit out of stars with "moon as big round belly".
Later River started making origami rabbits in attempt to remind Johnny of that day. It didn't worked so maybe she tried to specify it by making two color rabbit at verge of her life as a final push in attempt to remind him.
So there is that maybe they might be: A, Stars
B, Earlier attempt to remind him.
                                                             C, something completely different. :D

But that's how I get it anyhow. Take for what it is. ;)

Actually, this is the Asperger's syndrome. You can tell that because the book the doctor give to Johny is written by Tony Attwood, who is a real person. The title is not given, but it surely is "The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome".

^But that's not a mortal disease. Not to mention that this syndrome was diagnosed before she married Johnny, but as you notice that the scene when Johnny is at their half build house, he mentions that her disease was just diagnosed in her late state SO IT'S NOT POSSIBLE ;)

Well (SPOILERS) Edriss is correct, River's initial disease is Asperger's if we're talking about her mental disorder.  It's the same disease that Isabella has, where she says she's an actress of sorts.  The disease that eventually kills River, while I don't think it was ever explicitly stated, I believe it to be some sort of cancer.  He refers to catching it in the later stage which is terminology usually associated with cancer.  So river has 2 diseases in a sense.
