"If you like" To the Moon...
« on: December 04, 2011, 08:28:25 PM »
You know when in a review you see "Similar to" or "Try also this"... so i thought here everyone can recommend stuff "To the Moon" reminded him/her of, not necessarily other video games.

I'll start with couple of adventure games - Keepsake, which is basically Myst clone that plays as 3rd person, but the story is unusual as it starts mysteriously and unfolds slowly like in TTM.  Another suggestions would be The Whispered World and AGS game Eternally Us.

Movies - TTM on a couple of occasions really made me think of one of my favourite movies - Open Your Eyes, great Spanish movie.

And animated film - "Up", specifically the first 15 minutes of it.

btw i've just figured this should be in Meta :/

"Up" was cited as the inspiration for To the Moon, so that's understandable.

Also, check out Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. ;)

"Memento" as well, if you like reverse-chronological story-telling. c:

Lighthouse: The Dark Being. Because it has a lighthouse in it.

Movie: Apollo 13.

"Memento" is always cited when reverse-chronology comes into play (understandable, because it's a great movie), but people forget that it's actually "u"-chronology--that is, parts of the movie are in reverse order and others are forward, all linking in the middle. So "Memento" is much more unique in that respect. (This is off topic, but I felt like it should be said.)

"Being John Malkovich" is another good movie if you like humorous mind-trippy stuff, and it also is about going into a man's head, but more literally.

I'm not sure If it really fit, but "To the Moon" reminded me about "The Notebook". There's a book and a movie adaptation. Both are great. It's the best to watch without reading any reviews, trailers etc. before because of spoilers that can ruin some threads :P. Just trust me, you won't regret it.

I guess Psychonauts is kinda sorta maybe similar? It's takes a similar yet funnier tone to the whole "we're examining your mind" thing. If you really wanted to you could include Persona 4 as well, but at some point I'm just listing my favorite games. Heck, play Morrowind while you're at it :P

Since OP mentioned The Whispered World, I'm going to recommend Machinarium, even though it's not thematically related.

Planscape: Torment is similar in that it is very much about the writing.

It's hard to find suitable games, TtM is probably a bit to unique.

Perhaps Astronaut Farmer? I haven't watched the whole thing, but saw some clips after someone mentioned it. Not sure how good the actual movie is, but it's about some farmer who, well, builds a rocket in his barn. :p
