I never understood what River's sickness was all about. Does anyone know?

Asperger's syndrome. "Asperger syndrome is a form of autism, which is a lifelong disability that affects how a person makes sense of the world, processes information and relates to other people...People with the condition have difficulties in three main areas. They are: social communication; social interaction; social imagination." From http://www.autism.org.uk/About-autism/Autism-and-Asperger-syndrome-an-introduction/What-is-Asperger-syndrome.aspx

Though note that it wasn't what killed her, which was a whole different thing altogether.

I respect the decision not to mention it ingame.  It's a subtle sort of thing, and widely people don't perceive it as being very legitimate.  It makes for an interesting introduction to the subject.

I'm guessing there's someone in Reives' life who has the condition?

Paper cut infection.

I assumed it was cancer or something similar, but there's not enough information to say.

Unless you buy into this paper cut theory. The more Merlandese posts about it, the more plausible it sounds. :)

I'm also kind of glad it wasn't mentioned in-game, I'm one of these people that has a hard time believing extreme social awkwardness can be a mental disease just because it isn't "normal", or whatever. People can't just have quirks about them without the medical system branding them defective anymore.

Of course it is entirely possible it's a real problem that only has the side-effect of social awkwardness, it's just over-diagnosed IMO, and people are probably looking at the wrong things to diagnose it.

This is coming from someone who benefits from and supports medical science by the way, just not when it feels like it's being abused and/or exploited.

Curious to know what he died from as well, I thought the disease was something made-up in-game.

How exactly do you mean a papercut infection? Do you mean she had a small infection she didn't take care of properly?

I would've liked some of these things would've been a little more exposed. I have the feeling we only know a small part of the story. We never understand what John means with his little talk with Isabella for instance; that he "deserves some rest". Some more exposition on the simple small things of life could've given a stronger sense of nostalgia (think the first 10 minutes of the movie "UP" from Pixar).

Still love it though!

The origami guide in Johnny's study warned us. Johnny's house has three types of books: medical books, a book about origami (and subsequent paper cuts), and Dusklight, the book he bought to hide the key. Did he have the origami book the whole time and just didn't heed it's advice, or did he purchase the book after she got infected and it was far, far too late?

Knowing River, she probably got cut and never mentioned it. The wound became gangrenous, her immune system dropped, and, because of the market crash (that Isabelle mentioned), they didn't have enough money to build their dream house and save River's life with a one-stop shop to their local Walgreens pharmaceutical. Disaster ensued. A disaster the likes of which only Reives could dare dream up.

A single one.

But yeah, of course she didn't die from a papercut. :)
It was from many papercuts combined with a curious lack of bandaid in the game's universe.

Ah I've heard about that condition it doesn't discriminate and strikes unexpectedly. A couple of years back origami champion Rina Kinashiro tragically passed away from that condition. Whats it called again? Papyrumcaesalis?
