I am sure most of you have heard about it, but congress is trying to pass a law that would cencor internet. And if that happens to America, the whole world is going to be affected by it.

Today, Congress holds hearings on the first American Internet censorship system.
This bill can pass. If it does the Internet and free speech will never be the same.
Join all of us to stop this bill.

If this law passes, you'll wake up to find sites you love blocked by the US government. Tell Congress to vote "no" on SOPA.

Website Blocking
The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users
It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet
Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

Yes, it started on 16th, but it is still going on even today. So please send them a letter here: http://americancensorship.org/ .
It will take you not more than a minute and your vote can "save" internet~

I signed this thing, and I'm seriously thinking of calling my congressman here in Pennsylvania to vote against this.

A lot of petitions have been going around on DA about this, and all have been signed. One more to sign definitely won't hurt, plus a thousand more if that could save the internet from censorship. Hell's gonna break loose if this bill takes affect.

Dito, but as this will affect all of us,too. We should have the right to vote against it.

Whenever I see what those copyright industries are trying to do, I start thinking boycotting them is a great idea...
Even if you are nothing more than a drop in a bucket...
Every drop leaves ripples.

It is, very much so. That's why everyone is going crazy. ._.
They {Congress and stuff} think they are doing something good. Preventing people from copyrighting and stuff, but this is going too far and this law is very flawed.

Heh paradise of copyright violation isn't US of A but Czech Republic :D And what we're doing? Absolutly nothing because our goverment is too bussy stealing on it's own than to care about theft of such a degree :D (And that's very very sad in one way...)

http://kotaku.com/5868545/the-stop-online-piracy-act-and-you-a-primer

Kotaku released a really good primer on it if you don't know much about it yet. And yes, if you're not a U.S. citizen you are allowed to petition the state department as well. Heck, I wonder if you could contact your own state department and ask them to talk to the U.S. about this issue.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/16/sopa-vote-delayed_n_1154347.html

For curious and concerned netizens, it looks like the vote for making SOPA an official bill to be voted on has been delayed until 2012 :). The article mentions how it could be used as a tactic by politicians on both sides to raise money for the upcoming election, which I think is a pretty shady move, but the good news is that I think there is more combined money in the tech industry than in the MPAA and RIAA industry that helped create the bill in the first place.

Kudos to everyone who wrote someone in their government, whether they were American citizens or from abroad. The bill isn't officially killed yet but this is a much better start.

Now onto CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!  :mimihat:

WTF is SOPA ? aka The American Government trying to ruin the internet
Old River was as dead as a doornail, this must be distinctly understood or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am about to relate.
