N> Help deciding on animated battler size
« on: September 29, 2010, 11:52:58 PM »
Okay, so.. as some of you guys may know, I'm working on a RMXP game with a friend of mine. We're going for a sideview battle system and I need to make animated battlers for it. Currently, the game's using the RTP, and RTP-styled/sized graphics.

Currently, I'm using GBA battler rips as a base that are about the same size as the standard RTP char. I recently completed the idle animation for it:

But then, based upon a comment made by my friend, I decided to try my hand at making a slightly bigger (roughly 1.5x as big) modeled after the new template I've been working on. So far, I've only sprited the first frame of the idle stance, though:

Which do you think I should choose?

I personally really like the second one. The first one's feet and hands are way too big imo, and reminds me of a rabbit. :P The second one looks really elegant - though if the monsters are RTP-sized, it may feel a bit awkward.

If you're spriting them all from scratch anyway, you should go with whichever is going to take the least time. Obviously, the larger battlers allow for more detail and style, but they also take a lot longer.

That said, I really love the style of the second one, so that one got my vote :)

The first gives me a kind of nostalgic feel, so I like it better. The bigger size is good, especially for a battle, but I realy really like how the first one looks. Takes me back. Not sure why.

I personally find it hard to say personally I find the first more adorable, and the second more serious. Depending on the story and the monsters though I would choose them depending on which is more related to my other resources might make it easier in choosing.

Interesting thing...

First for a quick look is convenient, and do not need to convert RTP. But how Reives noticed there is too big hands and feets.

For the second - I am not a supporter of large-size battlers - they just look somewhat cumbersome in the 640*480 window, and full-screen spoils the impression. But here, everything looks realistic and elegant.

Even once hard to choose.
Spoiler: show

Sorry, I can not speak in English very well, but I perfectly understand it.

@ Raxus: Nowhere near a demo release yet.

Just finished spriting the idle animation in the new template:

The arms look a tad stubby, but it's probably because of the perspective we're seeing this at.

I like the second one, and it seems like they would be more rewarding once completed. Also, it would make the game more aesthetically unique, since a lot of games seem to recycle the same types of tiny animations. But I also agree that if the monsters aren't changed to match the size it would look weird. I think Legaia 2 and Suikoden five had that problem, where you could get in fights with soldiers and other humanoids, but they would be 3/5ths the size of the characters sprites. But yeah, the second one.
