Whispering Shadows
« on: April 04, 2008, 06:11:50 PM »
Well, I'm making my own game, and I just composed one of the songs. I was aiming for a sort of mysterious feel, but I'm not sure I quite hit the mark. What do you guys think of it?

It is a bit spooky, but too short... I think you have to add some more background instruments, especially bass instruments. Ask James about your composition...  ;)

@flayer, Not sure how to do the echoes, but I'll work on it. And yeah it's short, I wasn't sure how to lengthen it without a repeat (The song is for looping).

@path, Yeah, that's what I was thinking...but I like the flute. should I put the melody in the piano's right hand, and have the flute as some background ambiance?

0:50 - 0:54 <-That phrase is my favourite part in it.

And aye, I think the main criticism would be that there's two moods going back and forth inconsistently there; one with the 2-chord progression that can sound soft and touching, but in the second chord you tweaked the top couple of notes. This tweaked chord progression works, but the flute has to accompany with it too. Often, it seems that the piano is doing the tweaked creep-ish chord progression, while the flute does its melody to the untweaked warm-like chord progression. The 0:50-0:54 part however, fits perfectly.

Other than that, it's actually rather calming, and I've been listening to it for quite a while now, and feeling pretty chilled listening to it. I agree that some echo would do it justice, and often it's best if you have a built-in echo adder. You can also look into programs like Audacity (google); a free audio editing program that is quite handy. Or, another way to go about the piano echo thingy, is to double it with a soft echoy/pad instrument.

I didn't know you compose! :) Good stuff.

@rieves, whoa, that was detailed! Thankfully, I've taken music theory, so i get what you're saying (the piano lessons are paying off, wooho!). I'll try working on that. and 50-54 is one of my favorites, it's the first half of melody part 3 in the FL studios playlist (yes, I use FL studios). I do compose, but it doesn't usually have enough melodic drive to be useful in game. Anyways, with audacity, I only know how to use the echo for vocal effects, what setting should I use for music?

@path, yeah, it's the program. It was the best piano instrument I could find in FL Studios 6 (there are WAY too many instruments for me to have heard them all), but I could probobly tweak the settings to make it sound better.

@all, thanks for listening, and commenting.

Well I worked on it, so here's the new version, is it better?

Oh I love the piano in this one, makes it feel like the pedal is actually on. How come some random notes on the flute are louder then others?

Also
-Too short, as the others said
-And for some reason some parts of the flute don't seem to match with the piano, I don't know if it's because of whatever Reives said (me not having thy passive perfect pitch... damn it!) or something else............

I'm really not too helpful a lot of the time...

@menti, ok, I'll lengthen it slightly. and I know the flute doesn't seem to match. My perfect pitch doesn't help, since it's mood, not notes (it isn't them being dissonent, just the moods aren't fitting right). I'll keep working. Hopfully reives will put up another critique to help.

@Secret, I added some echo, and tweaked the panflute to fit the piano more.

ok, I'll try making it lower, and posting that as a version 3. Maybe I should switch the panflute to a different instrument. Maybe a violin.

Just randomly, what is a good music writing program I can get for free? I have a demo of Melody Assistant, but because it's a demo it won't let me convert to midi or mp3.

@menti, THere is no good free music program. The best free you can find is the demo versions of nice ones. If you want a nice one, you'll either need a keygen, or some money (melody assistant is cheap though).

@Pathbinder, ok, maybe I'll do a violin ensemble then.
