MMO Company Bans Male Players Playing Female Characters

http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/10/26/chinese-mmo-company-jumps-gender-benders

Well, this is touchy.  It's a bit old, but I'm a stupid and only recently found out about this.  I realize that this is all fine in China, but is this morally incorrect?  To play devil's advocate a little, is it wrong to "roleplay" being of the other gender while online?

I'm a big MMO junkie, so while I can say that while there's points in favor of both sides, I personally think that this rule is terrible, particularly in how it's being executed (webcam verification).

That sucks. I don't play MMO's, but I play some RPG's where you get to create your own character, and I almost always use female characters. I see no problem with it, as long as you stay in character:If you try to convince other people that your actually female in real life, when you're not, then that's wrong, but otherwise, I have no problem with it.

Most of my roleplaying characters have been female, but I like playing males, too, and like Travis says, it's fine as long as you don't pretend to be the opposite sex in order to do bad things.

If Combat Arms was considered an MMO (it's not), then I could understand that; in that game, females have a slight advantage. Nut shots. Self explanatory.

But on topic, my brother likes to play as a girl and I see nothing wrong with that. I personally play as a guy (on World of Warcraft) on every character cuz I don't like to pretend, but I do find it kinda fun though.

When I played MMOs, there were 2 or 3 people that played as the opposite sex and got me to believe their char's gender was their's as well. I was kind of taken aback, because I trusted them. Some of the things I said to them were somewhat personal. :-X

I think playing as the opposite sex is fine, except when you try and lie about your own actual gender.

I've sometimes played as male chars before, just for the fun of it.

Usually I play MMO's as a male character.
But I have played as a female on some occasions, truthfully though its for the free stuff...
There are so many males out there who give stuff to females players.
I mean I dont atually pretend to be a girl, but I dont have to...

Its all in good fun.

This sounds more like a scheme to get women to send in pictures of themselves.
^ :D

Mm, this' a rather bleh restriction. It does filter out problems like what Rayen said, but still quite a hassle - must be costly to supervise too. On my WoW account I had a male hunter named Reivier, a female shape-shifting druid named Lunair, male warrior named Vikon and priest name Kardian and the like for kicks - it was pretty fun to be able to do that.

:D :) I did that with one of my game characters, but for some reason, I just made it, I logged off, and came back to find it deleted O_o

Back on topic... I honestly don't see why it matters so much if people are gender-bending, as the article title states. Even if guys find it interesting to stare at their character's butts for 8 hours or like getting free stuff (I played a male priest in WoW and I gave out buffs out of sheer goodness). Plenty of people will do that if you just ask properly and don't ask for super expensive stuff.

But the fact that maybe some people would gender-bend to get people to come over... *shivers*

That's actually one of the things that bothered me.  Women playing male characters weren't part of this rule.

But the fact that maybe some people would gender-bend to get people to come over... *shivers*

That's the only legitimate reason for this rule - not really 'coming over', but more of a broad 'lying about their gender in order to flirt with other men', and beyond that.  I'm not homophobic or anything, very much so not, but I'm also not supportive of deceit like that.

It's because there were a series of crimes where males playing as females get along with a real female in order to gain information and harm them.

We're not talking a single string of crimes here. This sort of thing happens all the time, and not just with female victims.

I think it's fine as long as they don't start making people think that their gender is the one that there character has (like Stardale[?] said). anything online can be used in ways it was unintended, it's just knowing where to draw the line and being able to draw that line for yourself

Why would anyone be so stupid to flirt with someone in MMO  :-X
