Regarding the serious Spam Issue we currently have
« on: April 23, 2015, 03:32:38 PM »
Hello, there!

First of all, thank you guys for being a part of the FBG community. Some of you have stuck around for years. I am very happy to see you all again.

For those who won't know me, this is Arwym, or Jessica, as you prefer to call me. I am known as the "Forum and Web site Technician." I built these forums a long time ago, after finding Kan's first games, almost by accident, on the RMRK forums. I went to see his Web site and joined the, then desolate forums.

The original version of those forums was built on the phpBB forum software. The site was attacked by a ridiculous amount of spam every day, and it was very frustrating for me to see. By the time, I was already familiar with this other forum software called SMF, and I offered Kan assistance in migrating the forums to the new software, mainly because, back then, SMF was still strong against spam. How naive of me, to not realize that this was only a matter of time --as SMF (and this site) grew more popular, the same thing happened again.

So, what is happening right now is very much my responsibility. I get spam reports almost daily, and I hate to see how the spam bots have even developed as a part of this community's culture, spanning even jokes about it. I like that you guys have your sense of humor about the situation, yet it MUST be addressed, somehow.

I am going to start giving this a lot of thought and try to come up with a definite solution. Give me some time, please, but I promise that I'll do my best to end this.

Thank you for being here.

With love,
Jessica

I can totally understand where you're coming from, and you're right. The spam issue is something that needs to be dealt with in spite of the humor and jokes that have developed around it, and I highly doubt that there are many who do not believe this.

Take the time you need. I support you, and others support you as well.

PS. It's good to see your name pop up again.
If I could, I'd turn back time, forget it all and leave this mess behind.
If I could, her love would always be around.

Welcome back :) I do agree we need to get rid of all these spam bots. One time it was really bad where we got attacked by this one all over the forums. I don't have much knowledge on this but the SuperShigi forums removed bots and 0 post members a while back.

Welcome back! I have also been a bit concerned about the spam issue, I guess us making jokes about it is simply us trying to deal with it until someone else does properly.

Welcome back, I guess, I should say?? Haven't met you before, so, hi.

I must agree there are problems with these spam issues. Wish I could do something to help, but this smartass brain of mine have no skills in doing so. Still, good luck. We all support you  :D

Have you looked into forum mods/plugins to combat spam? Or do we already have some that I'm unaware of?

You gotta love your kitchen gundams.
Videogame developers are not gods that anyone should worship. I hereby decide that is my top existential reason to prove that horrible, horrible misconception, because that is becoming annoyingly rampant in every corner of the internet.  They can deserve critism, or thrashing even. It doesn't even need to be constructive critism. And even if you are a free game developer doesn't mean community is your personal ego farm.
