River's Parents
« on: November 25, 2014, 02:16:34 PM »
I was trying to think if we ever actually saw River's parents in To The Moon. After going back through some videos, I found only one mentioning of River's parents, and that was about her father. When John and River were looking at the stars in their first encounter, River mentioned that her dad said that the stars were burning spheres of gas. Other than that, you have to use your imagination as to who's who at their wedding day. Other than Nick and John's mother, there's three people with faces - an elderly man, an elderly woman, and a younger, short brown haired person...who appears to be a girl, wearing green. I'm guessing that the one wearing green is Izzy. Now, at the end of the reception party, the elderly man and woman are sitting across from each other at a table. At the beginning of the party, they're sitting at different tables. When John's mother goes to check on John's aunt, she goes to a table of faceless nobodies, so we know that the elderly woman isn't John's aunt. I'm THINKING that these are River's parents. I kinda wish there would have been a memory of one of them saying 'Take care of River now, ya hear?' or something like that, just so we know who they really are. I mean, I get that they really have nothing to do with the story, so we don't want to be distracted with them, but just one sentence would have been nice.
River: *Drops hacky sack*
River: "Can you throw this is as far as where Anya's at?"
John: "I can try."
John: "(Now I'll amaze her with my feat of strength.)"
John: *Throws hacky sack into ocean*
River: *Runs to cliff edge*
John: "River! Stop looking at my awesome throw and get away from that ledge!"
River: *Backs into John and silently sits down*
John: "(...Nailed it.)"

That's a pretty neat idea!

Johnny has a million memories we never got to see. I wouldn't doubt there are some interesting tidbits in them.

My favorite "missing piece" is that we never see Johnny learn how to play piano. Even though he must have spent a long time learning, or at least messing around on a piano, the line of memories the doctors travel through to solve the "moon" request never intersects that big part of his life we know must exist.

Oh yeah. When I first saw the piano in the gymnasium in John's teenage memories, I thought for sure that we were going to see something about him learning to play, but I guess it just couldn't be squeezed in.

I find the Piano piece a bit sad as a part we never saw... Well we at least saw how he got to painting. :D

Oh yeah, haha! Those paintings in his bedroom! Too bad you can't really tell if they're any good or not :/ Also, there's one that simply says that there's three people in it. Who do you think those three people are? I think if it was supposed to be him, River, and the pastor, that it would have mentioned it to be more of a wedding photo. Perhaps at this point he had already met Lily and her kids?

River, Nick and Izzy. You can tell by the hair pixels.

Lol, I don't know man. I tried squinting at that thing as hard as I could. If it is Izzy, Nick and River, then it looks like River was painted in a different perspective than the other two, because she appears much larger. And I can't really tell whether the hair color is brown or a dark orange. It also looks like there's something in the background - I don't think it's the lighthouse, since there's already a painting of that, but perhaps it's the actual house. Anyway, for the lady in it to appear larger than the other two, I'm thinking that it's Lily and her kids, with the house in the background.

Yeah, I felt that same lack of River's parents in the story, and also John didn't have a father neither. Also, at some point in John's memories, his mother did not even get mentioned, as his mother had maybe passed away at some point in his life, and we didn't get to see the funeral or something.
But maybe all those things were unnecessary details that have nothing to do with the main topic of the story.
Videogame developers are not gods that anyone should worship. I hereby decide that is my top existential reason to prove that horrible, horrible misconception, because that is becoming annoyingly rampant in every corner of the internet.  They can deserve critism, or thrashing even. It doesn't even need to be constructive critism. And even if you are a free game developer doesn't mean community is your personal ego farm.

I guess the reason why we never saw John's mother's funeral, was because Eva and Neil never accessed a memento that was related to it. Almost all memento's were related to memories of River.
