Making videos of RPGMaker games - what is the best way?
« on: November 15, 2011, 06:24:17 PM »
I'm currently making videos of TtM with FRAPS and running into severe performance problems.

Since the engine doesn't seem to use hardware acceleration (or at least FRAPS doesn't find a way to detect the window), I need to capture the whole desktop. I need to play in windowed mode to not mess up the aspect ratio (16:9 desktop). Both of these things seem to lead to low FPS.

Do you have any idea how to do an approach that performs better? Another capturing tool maybe?  ???

I would also like to know the answer to this question.

Since I have nothing to offer as a solution, I'd like to take this opportunity to ask you where your avatar is from. Kaffee. It's been nagging at me for awhile now...

Maybe now?

For the video thing, I think going to a lower resolution may help. Or looking at distorted sprites in fullscreen. :/

I use Hypercam 2 to record RMXP videos, and that works pretty well for me.

I use Camstudio (free) and the DivX 6.9.2 Codec. :) It's rather laggy compared to Frap w/compatible games, though.

The reason why I don't use Camstudio is that, even when I set it to record audio, it refuses to.

I use camtasia to do my screen-caps. It works well for me no  matter what game I'm playing. But then again, I've got somewhat of a beastly CPU, so that might have something to do with it, lol.

Audio in CamStudio is a big problem because it refuses to properly cooperate with the current Windows sound architecture. With a lot of error messages you can get it to work, but even then it has a kind of a weird way to write files with sound - save the video in one file, save the audio in another file, mux it after recording stops - that can break an otherwise successful recording because the last stop can't handle files over 2 or 4 GB. It's a broken mess that has been in serious need of updating for years.

Maybe I need to try HyperCam again - or hope that FRAPS works better with an SSD as capture target.

But only 30 days free trial so... yeah, I think you can't use it anymore after 30 days unless you buy it...

Im using Hypercam 3 (Officialy trial, but I downloaded trial version from official site and normaly working half of year - I   have only in window ,,Expired)", Format Factory to convert and Andys FLV joiner to join two or more videos to one (free and fast, no lose quality)

Note: Hypercam 2 Now is freed: http://www.hyperionics.com/hc/
