Title: [Making] Do You Remember My Lullaby
Post by: Reives on November 10, 2008, 01:13:45 AM

===============================

EDIT (Dec 21, 2008): This was the Making-Of thread for this project. For commenting on the project, please use other threads or start new relevant ones instead. Thanks.

===============================

Yeah, sorry guys, I think I'm going to be taking a bit of time to make a really short side project; shorter than The Mirror Lied. :)

It's something I've been wanting to make for a while now, and I even wrote some songs for it and posted it on this board before. And with the recent Winter Game Contest on rmxp.org, I figured I might as well as get to it now.

I don't have much info on it at the moment (and nor do I want to spoil anything), but here's a part of the theme song (don't mind the name, it's going to be changed):

http://www.quintessence-tbv.com/EHBirthday_CakeWIP-KanReivGao.mp3

And here's a single screenshot:

This will not be a "game", however, but rather just a short, non-playable story in the form of a continuous "cut-scene".

Edit: Title decided.

Ha, that looks nice. Seems like I'll have even more competition eheh .

Whew, looks good >_^
Seems like I'll have some competition aswell. I like how your going modernized! I wanted too, but I can't seem to find enough modernized winter stuff. I'm still looking though, as I'm starting actual production on the 15th (of November) for mine.
P.S. Thank the lord to Zanyzora, eh? (woops, stereotypical)
No, I don't make fun of Canadians, I just felt like adding the Eh? at the end. Tch.
Title: Re: [Name Pending]
Post by: Ruzu on November 10, 2008, 06:27:38 PM
Why does that image tell me this is going to be sad...?
Title: Re: [Name Pending]
Post by: Reives on November 10, 2008, 08:04:17 PM
Psh, using "eh" isn't making fun of Canadian accent unless you state it to be :P You could've gotten away with it!

And eh, does the screenshot look sad? ._o
Title: Re: [Name Pending]
Post by: zekallinos on November 10, 2008, 08:07:21 PM
Well, sure isn't the most joyful mood ever.

And in what is eh making fun of the accent ???
Title: Re: [Name Pending]
Post by: Tenken on November 10, 2008, 08:10:23 PM
Hehe, I am sly *play sneaky theme music*

Ahem...
Ok so anyway, actually the screenshot does look sad. Well not sad but sad in a happy sorta sad. ... Ok, even I don't know what I meant by that, but you know what I mean right? Like it looks sad, but its happy at the same time? Sorta like sad sweet rather t hen bitter sweet.

@Zek: Its been a sterotype that Canadians always use eh at the end of something. Example: Whats going on eh? Its pronounced like "A", so What's going on [A sound]?
Title: Re: [Name Pending]
Post by: Reives on November 11, 2008, 01:18:47 AM
Ah I suppose. I actually sort of "glow"ed it in photoshop a bit, which may be why.
I'm actually having a lotta fun making this. Modern setting is a nice break.

By the way, as for the "eh" thing - I think it only applies to rural parts of Canada for the most part, as where I live (urban/sub-urbs) I haven't heard it much at all. Well, I myself actually use it at times but it's quite subtle. And I've never ever heard "abOOt" for "about", ever. :P Think I remember someone else hearing it in Canada though; I think it was Abi but not sure.
Title: Re: [Name Pending]
Post by: abigailian on November 11, 2008, 11:56:51 AM
Well, I hear it a lot, and it's not exactly a rural area I visit. But we have some friends from the west coast, and they'll say 'hey' instead. Meanwhile, I'm not even Canadian, and I say 'eh' at the end of practically every sentence.

EDIT: Woops! Unspammifying time.

It looks really great Reives! Can't wait to play it.

Thanks. c: Technically it's partial white-ties, heheh.

Here's another part of the theme song! I discovered some key-switches by accident and found some totally awesome voice samples; exactly the ones I was looking for:

Yeah, it definitely sounds erhu-ish, sort of the same dynamic style. (Although erhus can be mistaken for a woman's voice, so mayeb that's ok. :) )

Okay, so eh, this looks nice. Music's good, graphics good, yadayadayada - so, what's going to make me interested in watching this? As of right now, it's of very little interest o.o
Title: Re: [Name Pending]

Aye, I'm sorta keeping it under the rugs at the moment with only a couple of screenshots and some previews for the song to show for strategic reasons. c: I'll try to make ya interested when it's ready to go!

Title: Re: Do You Remember My Lullaby

I love the name for some reason. I really can't put my finger to why I do... ???

But as stated earlier, I don't draw the lines just yet between the title and every other detail given so far.
This seems to be able to get me interested in trying it out, especially because I know it's so short and won't make me bored halfway through.
Title: Re: Do You Remember My Lullaby
Post by: Reives on November 17, 2008, 04:06:07 PM
Good to hear that the name has a good ring to it.

Don't worry about the fact that there is no correlation between the info given at the moment with the title; the actual short story has everything to do with it (in fact it's sort of a music video based on the song).

But even when a thread is posted when this project is complete, the info given on its project thread will be completely irrelevant to its actual story (but in such a way that it's not random and has some intention, of course). I am experimenting with a little WALL-E-esque advertising technique. c: And also, for a 10 minute-ish short story, there's not much left if the actual story's described in the info.

Title: Re: Do You Remember My Lullaby

Naw. You know how the ads of that movie on TV shows it like a carefree kid's show, and it's just him chasing a ball around and making fart jokes or whatnot, but when you watch the movie it's actually not? I'm mainly referring to that in the aspect that it gives the audience a different expectation when going into the show than what it actually is; whether that's good or not is arguable and depends a lot on the scenarios, but I think it's a good call in this case. [But don't leak! Or it won't work when I release it on forums. :| ]
Title: Re: Do You Remember My Lullaby
Post by: abigailian on November 17, 2008, 04:54:30 PM
...If you think you know what you're doing. Sounds fun, but it could be risky. (Btw, that wasn't at all the impression I got from the WALL-E comercials I saw. They put some legit stuff out there, too.)

Spoiler:  Off Topic • show
[quote author=legacyblade link=topic=622.msg12444#msg12444 date=1226441444]
O_O Hey is west US slang? I didn't know this x_x I thought everyone said it, XD But I also say eh all the time, and I'm not canadian >_>
[/quote]
I too use the word quite commonly without thinking it as slang.  That is of course if you mean the word itself in every instance being slang, abigailian, but if you only mean ending sentences in 'hey', then I don't believe I've heard of that.  Wait, are you talking the west coast of the U.S., or Canada?  Now I'm seriously confused. x_x  If it was the latter, disregard this, as I thought you were talking about the United States.

I'm mainly referring to that in the aspect that it gives the audience a different expectation when going into the show than what it actually is;
i.e. blatantly cheating your customers of what they expected. lol

So yeah, I hope to see this once it's finished.  Once I actually have something to really critique, I'll post something up here.
Title: Re: Do You Remember My Lullaby
Post by: abigailian on November 18, 2008, 10:31:15 PM
Oh my goodness! I didn't even think of that. Yeah, I meant West Coast Canada. And no, I don't think of it as slang, just regional/dialectal. And there is a difference, btw. Slang/formal/colloquial has to do with the context of a particular dialogue, while regional/dialectal differences have to do with social class and geographic location.
Title: Re: Do You Remember My Lullaby
Post by: Reives on November 19, 2008, 01:04:27 PM
i.e. blatantly cheating your customers of what they expected. lol
I disagree. When it's done strategically, it can potentially (if successful) achieve an effect that adds to the theme of the story.

Please move, RM[XP/VX] and Game Design.

No, just kidding. This really looks great because I ever wanted to play a game that's like a short movie with no special story, but rather with a primary focus on one special event and a character (or more than one character). A nice, little story that's what I want. Maybe some philosophical elements or just something to smile.
I eagerly await this 'project'.

I've done some good amount of work on it today, and it's turning out better than expected. Cut-scene wise, this is probably better/more delicately handled than Quintessence, as it is all it is, heheh.
[But can't wait to finish this and go back to get Quintessence done as well!]

Probably not, as I don't think there will be a point of it; as this is just a long cut-scene-esque short story and not a game. :p

All I want for christmas is this project...  :pewpewpew:

Well there is that WIP one that seems to be the Main Theme....If it's really short I would think that is the only one, but if it's more than 10 minutes in length I would think it has multiple themes like Rieves must compose as he is ''that kind of composer''. (melodic one)

Maybe one of the reasons Rieves took up this project was to compose a Score-Soundtrack (ongoing/movie-like) rather than a Track-Soundtrack (repetitive/game-like).

It's longer than 10 minutes for sure but probably won't exceed 15 minutes. Melody-wise, there is one only one defined theme - as unlike Quintessence and etc., it's a short story revolving around one simple thing. However, there will be variations of course, and I certainly won't loop the same 1 minute track 15 times or something like that. c: I want to do it in a "score" manner that syncs with the "video" part of it - but RM projects run at inconsistent pace through different computers and behaviours so that's not really possible, sadly. However, I tried my best to make it fit scene for scene.

Ken, seriously, just Screen Capture like I did with Takuto (http://www.takutogame.com). I can tell you the exact settings to put Camstudio on to get a perfect sync. Then you can just import it into your DAW or Movie software and start creating the score in MIDI.

You can then release it as a Video on your Webspace and on Youtube and other video sites. :-)

It's about 80% done. But tomorrow I am having my first (out of 5) exams this semester, all crammed within a few days, so I won't be that active. I finish my second last exam on Dec 11th (3 days from today I think), and the last one's a joke and on the 15th, so I'll probably release it sometimes between the 12th to 15th. :)

I love the music. It creates a warm christmas atmosphere.

Take the time; its better to publish the game a little bit later than a little bit to early.

I will most likely be releasing an early version on this forum that lacks some minor things like scene-select feature, but with the actual "movie" intact in its entirety. Finishing the last bit either tonight or tomorrow, so we'll see.
