Title: Last Word
Post by: Merlandese on June 13, 2014, 12:12:01 AM
(https://freebirdgames.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi66.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh253%2FMerlandese%2FAYPromo04_zps0e3040da.png&hash=f8194df4415ec67bf22e14ad6a07dce5) (http://s66.photobucket.com/user/Merlandese/media/AYPromo04_zps0e3040da.png.html)

If the pen is mightier than the sword, the mouth is mightier yet!

One-Sentence Story: In a society where getting the last word means having power over others, a small party is disrupted by a polite gentleman issuing orders via one-way intercom.

Genre: JRPG-like/Interactive Novella

Description:Photographer Whitty Gawship attends a prestigious get-together at the residence of the impressive Professor Chet Chatters. Members of the party are veteran conversationalists, each trying to gain subtle power over one-another. The mood shifts when Whitty and the others discover that the professor can get the last word in every conversation via his miraculous invention. Dastardly!

But what are the professor's motives? And why invite a commoner?

Last Word is an unconventional JRPG. Battle sophisticated guests using words as weapons. Collect topics by gossiping to unlock mysteries. Drink wine. The night is young and no one can leave until the devious Professor Chatters says so! Can Whitty and Seymour overcome the power of the professor's amazing machine? Or will they succumb to the saucy banter of the motley aristocrats around them? Don't hesitate in getting the Last Word.

EDIT: Updated. Older content in spoilers.

Spoiler: show

I'm going to upload images as I work on the game. I can't really take the time writing too much about it just yet since I'm on a deadline. But thanks for looking into it!

o.o are all those graphics custom made? Like ALL of them? Or are most of them just changing stylizing the shading on existing pixel work? Either way, you somehow managed to make nearly textureless pixel art look visually engaging. I want to play this just to figure out how you did that :P

Looking forward to seeing a demo sometime soon!

Almost all of the art is re-purposed or redone from the existing Social Caterpillar art. Since I made that art and the contest lets you use existing assets, I figured that utilizing stuff from SC would be a good shortcut.

Okay, here is my pre-fluff build! It plays all the way to the end but stops before the credits roll.

This game will be ready to ship in a little over 24 hours. Any and all testers are welcome to download this and post feedback and bugs. Mostly bugs. Always with the bugs.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13694360/Last%20Word%206-29-2014.exe

Some things to note is that some of the optional avenues are absent. The CHATTER function is incomplete, and so is the Key Topic: Wine Tasting. One or two other little things are being worked on right now, but since they aren't necessary to finish the game, I put them on the back burner.

Thanks, everyone, and I hope you enjoy it!

EDIT: I get "RGSS Player has stopped working" when trying to run it after install. Is this something to do with fonts again?

Did you try to add the game's exe to DEP exceptions? This is a common issue with RPXP games. I have to do this every time.

Downloading. I should have some time to check it later.

That was it, it runs fine now. I'll be updating this post as I play through the game.

Visual Bugs:

~ At the start the door sometimes closes before the servant has gone back through it. So he just walks through the closed door anyway.

Gameplay Issues:

I'm not sure if this is intended or not, but you can purposely lose games continuously to boost your exp and gain levels.

Spelling/Grammar Errors:

~ Once the servant lets you in, the s in guests is missing:

Just find some bugs.
1. At the beginning of the game, you can see the character, you might wanna start with no character until you show picture and add the character where it should be. or something about it.

2.
Spoiler: show

I don't know if I'm over level or what, but It's look's like it's pretty strange to find yourself finish before even start.
You might wanna add 1 bar for this :

Note : After this picture, the player will say "Pretty", I'm not quite sure if that is wrong or what...

3.
Spoiler: show

If you win against the professor, all the events in the room will repeat over and over again, my chara even can walk on the wall. you might wanna try to make an alternate ending with it. or just put the prof at level 50 or something...

Note :
I'm not quite sure if It's because I'm equipping all the skills or what, but I think the professor have the same skill as mine (And he using my "Saving Grace" so I have to defeat him twice...)

4. When you change topic to Wine Testing and talk to other, topic on the bottom left will gone (Not quite a bug I think) and you can't talk anything with the others about it.

That's all for now, I'll update again later on (Need sleep)

Oh yeah,
There's another bug...
Spoiler: show
The Cat's talking !  :whaaa?:
Just kidding, It's not a bug.
Overall it's nice, I like the graphic, and the system, It's somehow addicting, but I'm not really sure sometimes where to go , maybe you should put the "Lock Picture" on the next destination or some guide...

Note : I'm stuck at finding "Code Key To the secret room", I can't find it
Other Note : I'm not trying to lose where we should be winning.

everywhere....

So you guys lose more battles than you win every time?

Does it make a difference knowing that when you win a battle you get WAY more EXP than when you lose? There's a certain level difference where if you're losing over and over you spend more time grinding than if you would win once. If I conveyed the EXP gain differently would it change the way you guys played, or should I nerf how much EXP you get when you lose?

Thanks, that seems like it could be a big issue. :)

As for where you're stuck, I'm not sure where that is. If you Gossip with people about the last Key Topic you got, you should be able to get every next Key Topic needed to unlock the Locked Topic. The Locked Topic is the place on the map where there's a big yellow lock hovering over it.

Tell me which spot has the big lock icon and I can tell you who you might need to talk to. :)

I don't understand what happened here. Who is "Dr. Watson," and how did you get to that level before fighting the first real boss?

Did you just suddenly become that level somehow, or did you see yourself getting a bunch of EXP after battle? I'm so confused about this. XD Were you just leveling up for two hours or something?
Title: Re: Last Word (TESTERS WANTED!)
Post by: Unimaginative Username on June 30, 2014, 04:28:07 AM
The exp on losing is probably how I got my first few levels until I could beat the Purple guy. It probably isn't too much a problem since beating someone gives you much more exp - I just felt bad about constantly destroying the Grey man.

After the first few levels it doesn't work very well because the exp required per level increases quite a bit.

It's more of an early game issue, but since most people will be still getting the hang of battles at that time, then it might not be worth reducing the losing exp gain to avoid it becoming demoralising for people who suck.

I guess another thing it could depend on is whether or not the exp gain is scaled by the difference in level between you and the opponent. Is it possibly to loss against a really high level opponent and gain as much exp as you would by beating people at your level?
Title: Re: Last Word (TESTERS WANTED!)
Post by: Merlandese on June 30, 2014, 05:12:59 AM
EXP is calculated pretty simply in the version you have (I updated it based on this feedback).

Loss EXP = Whitty's Level

Win EXP = Whitty's Level + Opponent's Level

So no matter who you lose against you'll still get the same EXP, but if you defeat a stronger opponent, you gain a lot more. The Next Level is also a simple formula (not arbitrary numbers) based on your level that allows you to gain a new level after three or four losses. But if you fight Seymour (Grey) who always matches your level, you'll get exactly twice as much EXP after battle for winning, which means you gain levels twice as often.

The current version is more skewed. I made Loss EXP equal to half of Whitty's Level, which means grinding on losses is more effective early game and pretty pointless lat game. To gain a level on losses you'll probably need to lose seven or eight times. It's much better to win.

The skill Tipping Point modifies Loss EXP by bringing it back to 1:1 with Whitty's Level.

Here's doctor watson (from Sherlock holmes):
Spoiler: show

I called that Dr.Watson since the brown one wearing same brown color and same mustache with the same gentlemen's hat.

(https://freebirdgames.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fgenerationfilm.files.wordpress.com%2F2009%2F12%2Fsherlock_holmes_57.jpg&hash=6861c748321a6a6e6b88f31d7a21e3de)

And yeah, I leveled up till lvl 42, It takes me about 1-2 hours. I thought we should beat the brown one before we move on, but..
Oh well.

I was told to find a secret way, and the purple one told me about some secret code, I don't know where to find that secret code, The lock picture is above the Lip statue at the most left upper room.

And our skill like saving grace etc, I don't quite like to use it, since if we use it, our enemy can use our skill,
For Example : If I use saving grace, I have to defeat the enemy twice since his first defeat, they'll using saving grace (I better disable it then...)

I fixed the Saving Grace glitch. :) I also made it so Holden McCall doesn't mimic your moves. I did quite a bit of changes, actually! XD

The next step for the code is to Gossip with General Sandhoff (Green) about St. Lauden Forces. Since the code you need is a military code, it makes sense to bring up the military topic to the lady in the military. At least, I hope it makes sense. XD

Thanks for all the help! I fixed pretty much everything you brought up! I'm getting ready to submit it.

Here is another couple of bugs:

~ I bought the Wine Tasting Lv.1 topic but I can't gossip or chat about it to anyone. It has no effect and the interaction with the people ends.

~ I also can't seem to chatter to anyone. Same effect as above, it just backs out of the interaction.
Actually what seems to be going on is that chatter about that topic is just not available or is chatter just casual conversation not related to the selected topic? Anyway I can chatter to the Servant just fine.

This is using the same build as I used yesterday. Not the updated one.

Yeah, no one has the updated one. Those problems you're listing are optional world-building things that I put aside to finish the proper portion of the game. I spent most of today just finishing all of that! Thanks, man! You're in the credits as your real name, if that's fine.

So...

I couldn't get the vote button to work either, yet some other games seem to have quite a few "public votes." Hm.

And yeah, thanks for helping out, man. :)

The only thing truly missing in this final version is Key Topic: Photography. You start out with it, can get it to LV.02 optionally, and then it stays pretty much ineffective and untouched after Chapter 01. But it's not really too necessary to develop it. Key Topic: Wine Tasting works now, though. You use it to collect extra Stored EXP and fill your wine label list up. XD

Other Bug : you cannot gossip with the lvl 5 Private Prattle Topic

I try the new one, and It won't work either, so I try it before talking with prof, and It work this time, I'm not sure but I'm already move on, Thanks :)

I'm not going to, but outta curiosity, does it mention that it's against the rules to buy votes? XD Because for five bucks, you could easily buy a few hundred votes from...wherever those people you buy likes come from (as an internet marketer, I know where to find them online. Again, not going to, as that goes against the spirit of the competition, but I WAS curious.

I'm not going to, but outta curiosity, does it mention that it's against the rules to buy votes? XD Because for five bucks, you could easily buy a few hundred votes from...wherever those people you buy likes come from (as an internet marketer, I know where to find them online. I just don't know where they are IRL :P)

Again, not going to, as that goes against the spirit of the competition, but I WAS curious.

Ahem,
Don't you know I'm one of the judges ?
We'll banned your game if you do this.

And yes, I'm Serious about it.

Thanks for the encouragement!

They got WAY more entries than they expected, so the judging process has been extended a bit longer.

Hopefully we'll all be updated in a few weeks! I'm pretty excited. Whatever wins is sure to be a good game. :)

Owh, so that's what happen. (No wonder I can't see the winner... ::))
So, The time to vote will be extend too, right ?
Why don't you guys search for some people to give vote ?
That way, you guys can win.

P.S : "Whatever wins is sure to be a good game. " Not sure about it, I Tried the most voted rpg games, "Oneshot" and I can't understand anything and almost can't see anything... I'm not quite sure the "Voters" are true "Voters"... :reivsweat:

It was a long wait, but the results came in.

http://contest.rpgmakerweb.com/index/winners (http://contest.rpgmakerweb.com/index/winners)

Last Word made second place in the RPG category. Plus, it won the Judge's Choice award from renowned archmage and world-builder Ed Greenwood! Like, seriously, his quote about it is probably one of the coolest things to ever be.

Thanks to everyone who supported this, and triple thanks to everyone who helped test it out and squash bugs. This game would have been shitty without that help!

Wow, really late reply but I've gotten on to playing... I really enjoy the mystery of it! (plus the music is fantastic)
The game is quite complicated, but I enjoy the strategy :D but apparantly I'm very bad at it haha XD

just a note - if you don't have any saved data and try to play from load, you get stuck on the "no data" page.

Title: Re: Last Word
Post by: Merlandese on December 26, 2014, 06:28:10 PM
Thanks, guys! Here's the update to the blog-y thing from RMN (http://rpgmaker.net/games/6610/), since it has more details (and pictures).

01A. The menu is basically the same, but with a few little touches. The buttons have been re-mapped to make more sense. ENTER/C Shows descriptions, and SHIFT/Z equips (if possible). Wine bottle icons are different for each level of wine you find, and Skills show BOW icons when they're equipped.

(https://freebirdgames.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi66.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh253%2FMerlandese%2FScreenshot2014-12-23201154_zps6e881529.png&hash=d215e655ad7f4499133eb8e4ee785d77) (http://s66.photobucket.com/user/Merlandese/media/Screenshot2014-12-23201154_zps6e881529.png.html)

01B. The Key Topics are now also marked with a version of the star icon that corresponds to the level of the topic. This, as you might be able to guess, means that each topic will now max at LV. 05.

(https://freebirdgames.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi66.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh253%2FMerlandese%2FScreenshot2014-12-26144557_zpsf68d5095.png&hash=e5a56df76d916de840f34df11410842f)

02. The biggest thing is that the graphics have changed. The resolution was previously such that a pixel for a non-character object was actually a squared pixel. No longer! The new resolution means I get to add more objects as well as giving better detail to existing ones. This new title screen isn't final, but it shows off some of the changes.

(https://freebirdgames.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi66.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh253%2FMerlandese%2FScreenshot2014-12-26144535_zps8f5446df.png&hash=08fb7282c57aa6f13ce18efb1d4d3957)

03. The Discourse option used to only be for grinding (due to time restraints). Now when you choose Discourse you might win something extra through your witty persuasions. Gossiping for Key Topics can also be avoided in some cases, since the loser will spill the beans about the next step (if they know it).

(https://freebirdgames.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi66.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh253%2FMerlandese%2FScreenshot2014-12-26150058_zps7eff8605.png&hash=b31178db587c03a7a5718a253f788a9d) (http://s66.photobucket.com/user/Merlandese/media/Screenshot2014-12-26150058_zps7eff8605.png.html)

04. Lastly, there are new Skills. Plenty of them have been polished or gutted and replaced altogether. Each character also has their own unique Skill that Whitty can't replicate, giving each discourse its own flavor.

(https://freebirdgames.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi66.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh253%2FMerlandese%2FScreenshot2014-12-25165543_zps658db438.png&hash=691c17fa190df14a6e3141e10bd42ed1)

Before long I plan to get some amazing artist to draw the profile pictures of each of the characters. I think that art overhaul and the extra gameplay and story I'm adding/polishing will really make Last Word shiny!

Title: Re: Last Word
Post by: Merlandese on December 30, 2014, 02:08:46 PM
Yeah, a little bit. Mostly the story is polished and fleshed out a bit more, but I'm working on making an additional line of inquiry that expands the ending sequence. Hopefully it feels right and explains a bit more about the word.

LOOKING FOR TESTERS AGAIN!

That's right, the game is coming upon being officially awesome and I need the sweat and tears of the willing.

The testers who tested for the contest version will still be credited in the commercial release. But if you're interested in being a tester for the upcoming new build, ready yourselves, for the time cometh!

I'll post a version in a few weeks to whomever is interested in the task. Thanks!

Actually, fresh eyes would be AMAZINGLY handy! Thanks Kracken and Tumbledore!

I've had problems coming online lately, so I didn't get to mention that testers get a free copy o the game in any format it comes out on. The game has been brought on by Degica, which means it's basically guaranteed a Steam release.

Congrats, Merlandese :)

I only have 3 Questions :

1. Who is Degica ?
2. Can we enter the steam forum without have to install it ?
3. So, When you sell your RM games on Steam, Isn't that the income can't turn to be real money ? Why does it called "Commercial" then ? (Or perhaps It can turn to be real money, I don't really know about this one)

Sorry,
I'm really blind and know nothing about steam so far ;P

01. Degica is the company that owns/runs RPG Maker.

02. You should be able to make an account no matter what. Downloading the Steam stuff is optional. So as long as you make an account, accessing the forum should be no problem.

03. The word "commercial" is used to describe things that are sold for money. Quintessence is a free game because it makes no direct income. To the Moon is a "commercial" game because Kan sells each copy for money.

As for "real money," that's dependent on what you determine as "real." The money you earn on Steam is "electronic," just like the money you might have in your bank account and/or on your credit/debit card. It's "real" in that if you sell your game on Steam, you can spend that money anywhere that matters, not just on Steam.

Hopefully that answered some of it, Roxaszu!

I'd say in your pic #6, the 'unique' is misspelled. :)

Whoa.  The changes from the contest version are striking and impressive, especially visual-wise.

I'm only at my first playthrough, still at Chapter 2 - I have to cut short my testing session for now as I have to go some place, but I'll be able to continue later after work.  So here are my initial reports.

Quick question:
When the requirements are met for a certain topic to be leveled up, will it automatically change to that topic when you chatter?  Pretty sure I read this at the 'INFORMATION' at the bow, yet it doesn't in a few cases.

I suggest to up the save screen a bit!  Something like, an indicator for each save file (Save file #1, #2, etc).  Also, a warning when you're about to overwrite.

At the change music screen, I think it'd make more sense if the selected music was the one coloured white.  However, I assume you'd be getting rid of this feature at the final release.  :)

At the tutorial battle.  Hmm.  The gameplay of this game is unique but can be confusing, and a lot may end up figuring stuff on their own rather than learning it from the tutorial.  What I suggest is to not teach all discourse mechanics in one go.  More like, first turn = disruptive, second turn = submissive, nth turn = the 'type effectiveness' thingy for composure (i forgot what it's called).

Finally, as for the attachments:

Pic1: On the character stills, I've noticed that some colours extend beyond the outlines (see the legs).  The General also seems to have a single strand of hair on top of her head.  You should also consider disabling interactions with a moving NPC when it's about to enter a door - it may result to Whitty and that character standing on the same spot.  Highly advanced (I think) should have a hyphen between them.

Pic2: Lvl0 key topic (at the bottom) which should still be locked.  This happens after talking to the green character (the General).

P.S. Oh one more thing.  I just remembered from playing the contest version way back, there's this bug where if you talk to Ms. Prattle (? the red girl) while she's on the wine counter where the servant is, chatting to her about Chatters History will close the entire menu.  Not sure if it's been sorted out now, but it's worth checking out! :) :)

When you get used to it,
It's actually quite simple and easy ;)

I found a major bug on the skill which will make you have to restart the game (Luckily I save the game before that) :reivsweat:

I'll make it later.

@Roxaszu
There's actually nothing wrong with #3 and #5

I'd say in your pic #6, the 'unique' is misspelled. :)
Thanks :)
I don't really have any comment about the language used in the game since I'm not really sure myself
(Since I'm only learn the formal English here) :P

Some more.

Typos:
1. At the Topics under Menu.  In Chatter History.  Chett = Chet.
2. Gossiping w/ McCall about Lvl4 Chatters History.  Here = hear.
3. When you're about to discourse with Prattle.  Sorry I can't remember when, but it's with the 'deficiencies'.  You can probably easily track this because I'm certain 'deficiencies' only appears once on the entire script. :) (EDIT: It's in the beginning, Chapter 1)
4. Chatter w/ McCall.  The line goes something like, 'How are you faring?'
5. The scene where Whitty thinks to herself, after the General presses the switches and the diamonds in the cupboard appear.  Sparringly = sparingly.  On that same setting, I'm not sure about this, but 'more faint' should probably be 'fainter'.
6. I'm sorry I didn't take down where.  At some conversation with Seymour, the words are 'servants' and 'General' (the capital G).  (EDIT: The 'servants' is during the Chatter Special Event, Lvl 2 Saymore House, Chapter 2)
7. Gossiping w/ McCall about Lvl1 St. Lauden Forces.  Respectible = respectable.
8. Talking to McCall, when you're by the mouth.  Devlish = devilish.

Volume:
1. On the contest version I believe the BGM volume gets softer when you head outside (terrace?).  Now, it's louder.  I think it's best that way in there, +BGS, -BGM.
2. Should you also decrease the BGM when you're in the secret room?  It would make sense cos the rest of the house is then darkened.
3. At the start of Chapter 5, at the terrace.  The BGM volume is already the same as when you're inside.  So when you go in, and back out again, that's when it becomes louder.
4. Are you suppose to hear doors opening/closing inside when you're there?  Same volume?

Others:
1. Don't you get WAY too much EXP when finding a new wine label?
2. Looking at the secret room from the outside, the floor tile is already dark.
3. You can't gossip Lvl5 Wine Tasting w/ Mr. Boasting.  (EDIT: My bad, Roxaszu has already pointed this out :))
4. During those scenes where Whitty has a white picture, having the text white may make it difficult to read the dialogue.
5. Sandhoff's image is small/out of proportion.  Or is she really that small?
6. I'm just confused.  Didn't Whitty already got the last word from the cat's collar?  Why is the discourse with Sandhoff later losable?
7. At the washroom.  The panel thingy event is triggered when you interact with the tile just in front of the toilet bowl.
8. The 'complete' or something should appear after saving!  Rather than when the save file details are loaded.  Or you can add a confirmation saying that the save was successful instead of directly exiting the save screen.
9. I think it could very helpful, especially early on, to display the name of the persons during cutscenes (not only when you approach and talk to them).
10. Does anyone else get laggy during McCall discourse at the statue?  Because it goes back smooth as usual after that very discourse.  Happened twice in same PC.  Might test it on another though.
11. (Are you a Catholic?  Haha, nevermind)
12. Suppose you haven't checked out the 'statistics' wine yet and you're in Chapter 5.  If you interact with it, will you discover the wine label or bring up the statistics?  (I forgot to check this out because I accidentally overwritten a save file haha, gonna check it out later)
13. Title screen.  Those two pieces of bushes at either side.  There's a 'space' between them.

Screenshots:
Pic 1 and 2:  More of those Lvl0 topics.
Pic 3:  The Last Word can be equipped in a bug, which results in a negative number of bows.
Title: Re: Last Word

Booyakasha! :)

Typos:
1. 'Speechless-ness' should lose have that hyphen.
2. McCall and Boasting's convo at the beginning.  Impoverished.
3. Instructions at the beginning.  'Gossip with people to talk about...'  That sentence misses a period at the end.
4. Tofell Sparkling description screen.  Czechoslovakia.  Oh those people are gonna get mad at you!

Others:
1. When Prattle downs the wine Whitty serves him, at the beginning, you should wait before the slurping sound effect finishes before it can be advanced to the next line.
2. Check out the shadow of the toilet at the washroom.  Something's off about it...
3. Chapter 2, after heading out the washroom.  When you're done 'chattering' with McCall (locked topic), a star appears beside 'Gossip'.
4. Common Courtesy requires lesser bows and is cheaper than Polite Smile.  Common Courtesy gives 10 power and 10 tact, while Polite Smile only gives 10 tact.

LMAO at the 'guilt of parent-in-laws', can I steal it?

1. Pic 1 : She always blink her eyes on me when it should be finish, and her power keep rising, until I said "Hey ! It's done already, stop it !"
(Seriously, It'll never stop, the skill keep repeating over and over again)

2. Pic 2 : When you lose, There's a message saying
"Seymour Succeeds", So... I'm success ?

3. Pic 3 : If we skip the scene, Seymour will go to left first then the purple come, While if we watch it, The purple come first then seymour move (And not to mention to close the book first before purple enter the room)

4. Pic 2 : I don't know what the red dot for, Since it's not for seymour or for the purple (Sry, Kinda forget his name)

5. At the very ending scene, the "Immune" Word come from Mr.Boasting ?

These are all great! My internet isn't steady right now, so I can't give full detailed responses, but a lot of these are tremendous life-savers!
Title: Re: Last Word
Post by: GingerCorslette on March 12, 2015, 04:43:52 AM

Typo:
The General I was talking about above which needs a capital G is when you try to interact with the southwestern, protruding bookshelf, but you need to handle the General first.  Another 'general' can be found at the dialogue after you beat her (Listen, General...)

Military book:
1. If you enter some arbitrary page number in the book, nothing happens.  'Nothing interesting here...' line or something like that would probably do!
2. If you go back from Codes and Special under Index, it goes all the way back to the book main rather than the Index itself.
3. The same with Enemy/Frequency under Codes and Equipment/Operations under Special.  It skips the 'parent' section.

Plot:
I'm not sure if I've missed some dialogue, but Prattle spoils about the hidden room behind the bookshelf at the beginning of Chapter 4 if you gossip Lvl3 Hidden Word.  This is before you even enter CMORE on the statue and reveal the room.  On the same note, Seymour already tells the player 'so you've opened the room...' but I can't recall if he was pertaining to that room specifically.

Wines:
What is the eight wine?  The one before Carlin in the list?  I'm having troubles finding it :D If it's the one near the fireplace (the statistics wine), there's a weird bug where if you check on it, it doesn't register into the Wines Menu.

Audio:
1. Systems with older, more inferior specs would probably have a hard time dealing with 500kb/s OGG  bitrates.  You should lower them since it's atm for BGM use; 128 is optimal.  :)
2. In 'Final Battle', I suppose you could make the lead, ping-ing sound fuller/stand out more?  It's almost inaudible especially when listening through speakers (the string rhythm section sounds like it has high mids so it drowns it out).  At ~50 seconds in.
3. Salut (Remastering).  My favourite track!  When the guitar re-enters and joins the pipe(?) instrument, it's too loud   About a minute and half in.

(You have a knack for melodies BTW - I would love to hear more of your compositions!)

Others:
1. After the diamond cupboard rises up, William busts into Chatters' room as if the door was unlocked the whole time.  :)
2. There are a few more instances where you should also display the 'movement' thing at the bottom with the arrows to notify that we have regained control, you know, after a scene.
3. About that volume issue I mentioned about Chapter 5's BGM.  The same thing can also happen if you load into the chapter.
4. You should consider displaying what accomplishment has just been accomplished, so you wouldn't need to go to the menu to find out what it was.
5. At Pic 1, I can't walk into that tile above and below of the rightmost chair.

I'm stuck at some portions... what are the codes for the picture at the secret room and the one near the mouth? XD

I'm not really sure which one was it. There are 3 in the servant's room (bar), 1 in the toilet, 1 on the balcony, 1 near the fireplace in the living room, 3 on the table (one of them gets broken by Mrs. Prattle).

I have some good internet, so I'd like to say that all of this input is phenomenal! I love you three so much right now. With my heart parts and everything.

I have some loaded comments from you that I should follow up or answer.

-(GC) 4. Are you suppose to hear doors opening/closing inside when you're there?  Same volume?

When you're in where? And which doors?

-(GC) 1. Don't you get WAY too much EXP when finding a new wine label?

Do you think so? The KT: Wine Labels is more of an investment topic, when your pay to have it and then it pays you back more. At least that's the hope.

As a quick explanation, Special Events give you EXP equal to the number of Special Events you've seen. So getting more scales how much more EXP you earn. Wine follows this rule except it adds 7 more EXP to any bottle. The equation looks like this:

[WINE EXP] = 7 + (# of Special Events)

The cost of the Key Topic:

[KT: Wine Tasting] = 10*(LV. of Wine Tasting)

To purchase four levels of Wine Tasting costs 100 EXP, which gives you access to every actual wine bottle (not the stats bottle). Assuming you never get a Special Event other than wine, you'd earn 108 EXP (I think). That's a marginal net gain, but the nine extra EXP will stack onto every other Special Event. So that's the logic. XD

Net Earnings
LV. 01 = (-10) + 27 = 17
LV. 02 = (-20) + 23 = 3
LV. 03 = (-30) + 27 = -3
LV. 04 = (-40) + 31 = -9
Net Gain = 8

-(GC) 2. Looking at the secret room from the outside, the floor tile is already dark.

I'm not sure what you mean here.

-(GC) 6. I'm just confused.  Didn't Whitty already got the last word from the cat's collar?  Why is the discourse with Sandhoff later losable?

Hopefully this isn't too obscure, but the fact is that she doesn't benefit from showing everyone she has the power to ignore their persuasion. There's no reason to reveal your trump card before it's time.

-(GC) 12. Suppose you haven't checked out the 'statistics' wine yet and you're in Chapter 5.  If you interact with it, will you discover the wine label or bring up the statistics?  (I forgot to check this out because I accidentally overwritten a save file haha, gonna check it out later)

I guess what you're asking is whether you can see the Stats Bottle before chapter 05. The answer is yes. As soon as you buy KT: Wine Tasting LV. 05, you should be able to see the bottle. I believe it should also be visible in every cutscene, but that needs tsted better.

-(GC) 13. Title screen.  Those two pieces of bushes at either side.  There's a 'space' between them.

Blame the gardener. XD

-(GC) 4. Common Courtesy requires lesser bows and is cheaper than Polite Smile. Common Courtesy gives 10 power and 10 tact, while Polite Smile only gives 10 tact.

That's intentional bottle-necking. I want to direct the player into certain easy-to-understand skills first, but I don't want to actually force them into it. The other skills are more expensive and so less at first, but that's the price to stacking the stats, like stacking buffs. Furthermore, those skills upgrade, which is a concept that might be too much for a fresh player. Instead they take the clearly better deal and ease into it all if they aren't too inclined on jumping ahead of the game.

-(GC) LMAO at the 'guilt of parent-in-laws', can I steal it?

I think in-law jokes are free game at any point in history. XD Go ahead.

-(Kyo) I, on the other hand, can't get the seventh one (below Tofell Sparkling), even though I did examine all nine bottles.

This is a trickster move, but at least it's not miss-able. The last bottle is a painting of a bottle. After you resolve the "mystery" of the professor's portrait, you can go back and inspect the bottle painted near him.

-(GC) I'm stuck at some portions... what are the codes for the picture at the secret room and the one near the mouth?

The one near the mouth is solve-able, but incomplete. I'm not even sure I want to keep it. The one in the hidden room leads to the secret ending, which is currently under construction. However, the code for it will be revealed only after beating the game once.

I already finished the game once, but still clueless about that actually.  :reivsweat:

Actually I kinda stuck in those two (The code in the photography lvl 5 near the prof's door) and in the bookshelf that professor say "The last word" is... I really don't get it .
And is it right about one at the ending "Lvl 6. something" (Kinda forget which topic that has to be at level 6 )

And before facing the mouth, I kinda stuck with level 4 of :
Hidden words
Chatter History
Domestic Feline
Saymore House

And only able to get 3 achievements (And I thought if I find all the bottle, I'll gonna get achievement, But no I guess..)  :reivsweat:

As for the exp finding the bottle, I think It's just right ;)

Is the first Discourse (with the Red one) and with professor in the room, If we lose from them, will it be counted as "Defeats" ?
If so, Is there any way to win the first one ?

I'll try to make it more clear in the game, then! :)

These unlock after you solve the code for that first question.

-(Rox) And only able to get 3 achievements (And I thought if I find all the bottle, I'll gonna get achievement, But no I guess..)

Most of these are accessed the same way. Finding all Key Topics is one, for example, which means you'll need to solve that code. But just remember the fable the professor told you.

-(Rox) Is the first Discourse (with the Red one) and with professor in the room, If we lose from them, will it be counted as "Defeats" ? If so, Is there any way to win the first one ?

Those definitely get counted, as annoying as it is. But it's not linked to an achievement; it's just data. Technically Mrs. Prattle (the first battle) can be defeated, but only through rare instances o luck. It's not worth going through. But if you do it, there will be alternate text.

Ahh,
I see,
Then that mean I already got everything before that code :D
Glad I didn't miss that bottle before she throws it to the mouth  :reivsweat:

Edit : I got all lvl 5 now, And finished the game one more time, and the only thing that I found is another surprise (I mean I really surprised by it, Playing at 2.20 AM, in the middle of silence, Suddenly there's a female voice saying something and laughing while I'm playing with my Phone  :reivsweat:) instead of the code.  :reivsweat:

-(GC) 4. Are you suppose to hear doors opening/closing inside when you're there?  Same volume?

When you're in where? And which doors?

When you're outside/balcony/terrace (where the save ribbon is on Chapter 5).  The doors when NPCs enter/exit rooms.  Even non-adjacent rooms.  :D

Do you think so? The KT: Wine Labels is more of an investment topic, when your pay to have it and then it pays you back more. At least that's the hope.

How do I say this...  Um, how much the wines/special events pay you back, kinda minimizes the essence of discoursing to gain EXP.  You can pretty much finish the game with less than 10 discourses, not counting the compulsory ones (at least for me).

-(GC) 2. Looking at the secret room from the outside, the floor tile is already dark.

I'm not sure what you mean here.

Okay now that I've look at it again, it's more about the picture.  My bad!
You know how when you're in the dining room, the rest of the rooms looks dark?  The floor in the secret room is already dark as should be, but the wall/picture looks illuminated.

-(GC) 12. Suppose you haven't checked out the 'statistics' wine yet and you're in Chapter 5.  If you interact with it, will you discover the wine label or bring up the statistics?

I guess what you're asking is whether you can see the Stats Bottle before chapter 05. The answer is yes. As soon as you buy KT: Wine Tasting LV. 05, you should be able to see the bottle. I believe it should also be visible in every cutscene, but that needs tsted better.

I've actually re-tested this and what happens is you'll discover the fireplace wine first (forgot its name), then you can bring up the stats.  The wine doesn't register though for some reason.  BTW it's kinda funny also how she can recognise wine from the vomit at the washroom ^^

Also, PM how you want to be credited. :)

I have a suggestion, which may be far-fetched though.  How about requiring discourses when advancing some key topics?  The end-of-chapter discourses could become boss battles, lol, which have a boss battle music.

  I kid!

As for if other players will experience the same way...  We may need the response of Roxaszu and Kyo (and others) :D  The less-than-10 figure is just a subjective 'guesstimate' and is very debatable, if you count bows and all other rewards you receive along the way, and the skills you can buy with EXP.  Also this is because at some point you'll then be able to equip the Last Word (you can't lose).

I just found a massive bug. When you lose a discourse, you get an Immunity prompt and the option to speak up. That's only supposed to happen AFTER getting the collar! I never found it before because I've played so much that I rarely lose. Anyone else find this bug, did you just think it was normal?

Yep, I thought it was supposed to be there. And actually I never tried remaining silent after losing a discourse.

I thought It was normal (Lose from the very beginning).
I think It's from Chapter 1 or 2.

I have a save file from Chapter 3 and I also get it there...  :)

Also, dunno if it's a bug but I cannot scroll up/down when analysing the skills between you and your opponent during discourse.

It's not a bug. There isn't any scrolling there. You see the list of their moves and get an explanation of the one move you don't have data on.

I have a change for the next version that I could use an opinion on before going with it.

Previously, you could Discourse with Prattle (Red) from chapter 01 onward, even though she's a high level and will beat you. I want to make it so you don't get to fight her until she's the Boss of Chapter 02. That will mean that only Seymour (Grey) and McCall (Purple) can be battled in chapter 01.

The next chapter has Sandhoff (Green) appear. Originally she starts at a high level, like Prattle did. Now I'm making her a low enough level to fight, growing at a good rate each chapter just like McCall does.

How does this sound? Would it be less complex having only too people to fight in Chapter 01? And would it be more satisfying to defeat Prattle after she becomes a boss rather than before?

I agree completely. It's not that being able to discourse with her early on is a hindrance or anything, but I felt pretty overwhelmed at first with all my options, and not exactly sure what my next move should be. I tried discoursing with her a few times because I thought I had to in order to move on. I think getting rid of that option should simplify things a little, which I think it needs. And yeah, I think it would be more satisfying to beat her as a boss.

Sorry for my silence. I've had the assignment week from hell! I haven't finished yet, so no spoilers. :pewpewpew:

Hmm.  I'm up for moving Prattle.  Chapter 1 isn't that complex at all.  You can defeat William (lvl 4) even if you're level 1, meaning, even if you don't do discourses prior and just level up key topics.  So if you teach Seymour, you'd be level 2, which even increases your winning chances.

Well,
I think for this one,
It's already really fit for me.
Except of course for the servant and the purple one, since I was leveling up with Seymour and when I wanna discourse with the purple one, It's already kinda weak, maybe you can make them both (Higher Level).

Oh yeah,
I kinda forget when it is,
I think at chapter 4.
I already at max level and almost same as Mr. Boasting.
But when I wanna discourse with him, He refuse because the level difference.

Incidentally, Seymour is my favorite Final Fantasy antagonist!

He's second for me, and a close second. It's hard to beat the only FF villain that actually succeeds in their plan for a whole year before being stopped. XD

That was a joke, I don't really have favourite FF antagonists. And there were more of those, who managed to accomplish what they wanted. Like Exdeath from V.
Actually, in JRPGs it's a rather common thing. If they want to summon The Ancient Evil or destroy The Tree of Life or something, they usually succeed. And then you need to beat the finalest final boss and/or restore the Yggdrasil and so on.

It was a joke! How DARE you! :P

And yeah, most villains succeed to a degree, especially right before you beat them. It's unlikely the villain will get what they want and actually accomplish much before the heroes shake them down. But Kefka got what he wanted and held it for A WHOLE YEAR me. He didn't ascend to Godhood and then you Omnislashed him to pieces, nor did he compress time only to be Renzokuken'd. He got the power and destroyed the world, then he sat back ruling it and zapping people with lasers for such a long period of time that half the characters got jobs and new lives, fully accepting his new world order.

People can play last word on the mac now? :o HOT DAMN! I've got some friends who should play this!

YES! Take their wallets and hand them to me! Mwahaha! :P

Seriously, though, spread the word if you like. :)

I really wish I could respect Kefka as a villain, but he was portrayed a lot more as a Jester than a General. I think FF6 could really benefit from a mature remake. If it was remade with today's graphics, combat systems, and maturity, it would probably seem like a whole new game, and it would be a remake that I would definitely buy.

Why are we talking about this in the Last Word topic? Oh well, I don't care, I love FF talk!

And yeah, Kefka as a jester was definitely what they ere going for first, general second. I see nothing wrong with that. If anything, it makes it a better villain, because the jester is typically too much of a buffoon to accomplish anything so lofty. The next time I think I saw the jester come out on top would be Super Paper Mario.
