Title: How come no one's talking about the shifty Trans-Pacific Partnership?
Post by: Tumbles on December 12, 2013, 08:03:41 AM
The TPP has been around for a while, and while it might look like a handy economy-boost, it actually has very little to do with trade, and much more to do with invading online privacy. Seriously, it's like ACTA, SOPA, and all those other nasty ones rolled into one.

So here's the deal: The TPP is a large-scale trade agreement that is said to remove the cost of trade between countries, but the agreement itself has 29 chapters, and there are only 5 that actually deal with trade. One of the chapters is known as the "Internet Censorship" chapter. It focuses on criminalizing your online activity, invading your privacy, and costing you money (because of the extreme monitoring that Internet Service Providers would have to agree to under the agreement).

So what does this mean? It means that if you share a recipe online, you may be fined. If you download a song, you could be kicked off the Internet. The would even reserve the right to seize property for any activity that is deemed suspicious.

Anyway, it's worth reading up on. It's surprising that this is getting less attention than SOPA, but I guess it's all been very secretive.

If you're interested, here are a few good places to read up on it:

Good question. This is the first time I've heard of this. Time to get the ball rolling again.
