Title: Non-English Freebird Game Website
Post by: Ruben on March 28, 2012, 10:32:43 AM
Heya,

there are languages other than English available for a couple of weeks now. Whenever I get to the German site (http://freebirdgames.com/de/), however, I still get a translation that seems to be automatically done. As a consequence (although it seems to be quite accurate) there are some passages that are wrong or sound strange.

Was that intended? I heard there actually is a good translation of the content, but I cannot see it.

Some browsers automatically translate foreign languages into english. Try visiting the website with a different browser and see if it still translates :)

I think Google Chrome shows a drop-down option to change the language when I get flooded with too many foreign words. It might not work the same in different countries, but Chrome is pretty solid in the States.

^ This.

It usually asks whether you'd like it to automatically translate the language for every website. If you've said 'Yes' before, then that would be the problem.

^Yeah but the quality of that translation is erm... mechanic... Might be the best word to use.

There is a hard translation of Freebird homepage to german and one other language though ;)

No, Firefox never translates something by itself unless I tell it to do so. This must be automatically done by the website. And not everything is translated. The game titles, for example, are not. Usually a automatic translator would not recognize this, so there must be some manual work, too.

There is also a button to edit the translation.

There was a translation for the TtM-Part of the German website.
I've already told Reives about this, seems like it isn't the automatic translation anymore now.
But the button to edit is still there...

From what I've been told by Arwym, the translation pages are intentionally open-edit in a Wiki sense.

Hm, the auto-translation's only on the main page, right? I don't think that page has been manually translated, so that makes sense; but just to make sure -- is the actual To the Moon German page is fine?

Oh, a question about the German TtM page (http://freebirdgames.com/de/to_the_moon/ (http://freebirdgames.com/de/to_the_moon/)): about the aunt quote, does it sound like it's an actual plain compliment, or kind of a backhanded one? It's meant to sound like, "yeah, the game wasn't that good, but at least the music's kinda bearable".

Yes, it's fitting.

The wiki-like edit options are a nice thing, but there are some problems, mostly related to the different structures of the two languages. You can only edit the text between periods and commas, but the periods and commas itself are untouchable. This results in sentences that, even if gramatically correct, have a wrong punctuation. This is especially notable in the last part of the To The Moon page and does not leave a professional impression.

And the To The Moon page is not what I would consider fine; it's okay most of the time, but there are some mistakes like the ones mentioned above.
