Title: Resources for "To the Moon" translation projects (updated to DMK XP 4.9.1)
Post by: SenorKaffee on November 08, 2011, 07:29:32 AM
To the Moon dialogue file (plain text)
TtM v1.2, DMK XP v4.9.1
dialogues_dmk4_9_1_ttm1_2.zip (http://www.studiospecialplace.de/dump/ttm/dialogues_dmk4_9_1_ttm1_2.zip)

TtM split dialogue translation spreadsheet (Google Docs)

The link is a read-only template. If you want a sharable copy for your translation team, please contact me (http://freebirdgames.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2206) with your Google-ID and I'll set up a copy for you.

Dialogue file generated with DreaMaker XP v4.9.1.

Before reimporting, make sure your dialogue.txt is of UTF-8 encoding, or special characters like umlauts will not show up on the game! Advanced text editors like Editpad Lite or Notepad++ can do the conversion for you.

If you need a developer version of TtM for playtesting purposes, please contact Reives (http://freebirdgames.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3) directly.

Sweet.

I have a bunch of questions, maybe the answers will be in the longplays you mentionned, but I don't know what those are.

So is this final, can we just translate the text (the spreadsheet is an awesome idea) and it will easily be imported back to the game?

I'm not home so I can't test, but what about the "\.", are those forced line changes?
Is there a maximum number of characters per line?
And what, three lines per text box?

And what about the text boxes finally? Do they "scroll" arrow appears automatically in-game when character limit is reached?

Do we have a maximum number of characters that fits in a single text box?

So eeeh yeah.

I'm no expert in this engine - what I've gathered so far:

Ther font used is not fixed, so there is no fixed limit in characters per line.
Trial and error or "prerendering" in Photoshop.

About those longplays - when I take from translating and actually replay TtM.
But maybe another friendly person with Fraps/Camstudio and a YouTube account could provide those?

Thanks!
This already helps a lot.

Unfixed, does it means that the more characters per line, the smaller the font?

Thanks!
This already helps a lot.

Unfixed, does it means that the more characters per line, the smaller the font?

Unfixed size means you can squeeze for example 10 "l" in a line, but only 7 "a" because "a" takes more space than "l".

To Reives:
Is there anyway we can test our translation directly?
I think you would not want to release your RPGMaker project file for the game, but could you send us a bare bones stripped version that allows us to test balloon boxes?

Also, i believe we need some directions from highup, for example:
- How do we treat names?
- How much freedom do we have in translating special cases like puns or anything else that is language-related?
- Do we need to compress dialogue, or can we expand the ballons (and if so, how)?
- How do we test the translation?

Thank you for the post and detailed clarifications, Senor! They're greatly helpful.

Just a minor fix: To toggle bold and italics, it's actually always "\b" or "\i" instead of "b\" or "i\" as closing tags. :)

@Madeiner: I'll send the RM project file to you in PM; it's no prob. If anyone else needs it, simply let me know.

Quote
Is there anyway we can test our translation directly?
Yep, you would be using the same DreaMaker program SenorKaffee used to extract the dialogues -- I haven't had any experience with it though, so maybe Senor could pass along a link to the download and/or instructions.

Quote
How do we treat names?

Quote
How much freedom do we have in translating special cases like puns or anything else that is language-related?
Since puns are often language-specific, the best case scenario'd probably be to re-write it into a different one that works with the language. It's pretty difficult for me to decide personally though, so it'd be something to be decided on with your teammates.

Quote
Do we need to compress dialogue, or can we expand the ballons (and if so, how)?
It's probably best
Each text box can have a max of 2 lines of dialogues (not including the first line with the name tags), but you can expand it into a second dialogue box if needed, e.g.:

Quote
-----------------------------------------------------[40][0]
\ignr\e[17]\nm[ Dr. Watts ]
"That's okay, \.I tend to be bad at
predicting deaths as well."

^To add another text box after that, just copy the entire thing minus the actual dialogue, like

Quote
-----------------------------------------------------[40][0]
\ignr\e[17]\nm[ Dr. Watts ]
"That's okay, \.I tend to be bad at
predicting deaths as well."
-----------------------------------------------------[40][0]
\ignr\e[17]\nm[ Dr. Watts ]
"*this is the additional line added*"

If anyone's familiar with DreaMaker and have any tips and the like, feel free to say. :)

DreaMaker tutorial:

Download from link in first post
Copy EXE to project directory
Choose option 1 and then 2 to write dialogues.txt
Edit dialogues.txt
Choose option 3 and then 4 to import new dialogue
Test

After the first reimport of the germanified text, we see some missing umlauts, but the process works in general.
Looks to me like DMK is eating them, since you can edit in umlauts in RPG Maker.

I'll try to contact the author about this issue. Maybe it is something trivial, like changing the codepage of the text file.
The author should have support for special characters, since the documentation is in french...

CRISIS AVERTED - check update

The author of DMK answered - telling me DMK 3.8 is old as hell (although the last public version) and that it should play well with French, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Finnish and other languages. Most likely the encoding of the dialogues.txt has to be adapted, I'll keep you posted.
Title: Re: Resources for "To the Moon" translation projects
Post by: SenorKaffee on November 09, 2011, 12:18:59 PM
Alright, before reimporting you need to make sure that the encoding of your dialogues.txt is UTF8.
You can change the encoding in advanced text editors like Editpad Lite or Notepad++.

BTW cyrillic characters work to, so it should work out with most languages that fit in UTF-8.

Hey SenorKaffee,

You might have to do a video finally ;)

I can't seem to get it working.

I'm able to extract the dialogues.txt from the project.
Then I edit it with mine, convert it to UTF8 (I think it was already, but I convert it anyway).
When I reimport the dialogues, it says like 1550 lines imported, I press enter, then there's an error.

Two things :
1. Do I have to import all the pages into dialogues.txt or can I just put one particular section/map?
2. Related to #1 : if I want to test one particular dialogue for text boxes and all, can I do it? If the dialogue's in the middle of the game, can I go directly to this one?

Thanks again!

In Team Deutsch we also had a lot of those problems - it just means "something is wrong with the dialogue for that map". But what - I do not know. Maybe King Kadelfek can see it.
Title: Re: Resources for "To the Moon" translation projects
Post by: King Kadelfek on December 06, 2011, 01:41:13 PM
This problem happens when DMK tries to replace a dialogue at position x, and the instruction at position x is not a message.
When someone includes dialogues (Step 3) the positions change. So, you have to do Step 2.
translate > Step 3 > Step 2 > translate > Step 3 > Step 2 > etc...
I call this problem the "Step 3 problem".

I desactivated the automatic Step 3 + Step 2, it should have been back in v3.9, but I never developed this version.
Don't worry, the option is back in DMK XP 4.9. AND when there is a problem with a dialogue, this dialogue is skipped.

DreaMaker 4 is far much better, because I developed for Aldorlea Games / Big Fish, with many returns from Indinera.

Thanks King. :)

I vaguely remember that this is expected with the current DreaMaker and the newest version incoming will fix it, but just in case:
Hi guys... One of our members has tested out, it turns out that chinese characters didnt show up in the game. Probably it is because UTF-8 encoding. Can we get anything that could fix that problem?

I replied in the concerned topic, thanks.
Don't worry, I will check every topic in the translation board. But only the french and the english section.

To SenorKaffee

I have translated some parts of the dialogues.txt you uploaded in to Thai

The question is I would like to test if it's working in the game so how do I import the file back to the game?

Do I need the unprotected files from Reives? because I can't seem to file the "data" folder in my To the moon game folder :(

Yes, you need the unencrypted game files in order to import the new diolgue-file.

ok, so I've tested it. Thai font doesn't work in the game :(  I shows nothing at all

I don't know if it's the game font itself doesn't support thai or it's the DreaMaker (tested both versions) !!

I have the dialogues.txt file converted to UTF-8

Anybody got any ideas?

any help would be really appreciated!

I want to say that I'm really, really happy that the translation have been updated to DMK XP 4.x. :D
Because I don't support DMK 3.8 (it's several years old), so if someone have a problem with DMK XP 4.x, I can help him. ;)

Resources updated to DMK 4.91.
It's 4.9.1, not 4.91. I edited your posts (Reives gave me mod status).

Please always specify DMK XP 4.9.1, because DreaMaker version 4.x works only with RPG Maker XP. I try to avoid confusion.

Hi all,

I try to start the translation project, but I am stuck, before done anything  :)

1. I have downloaded the original scripts (it is the same in the dialogue.txt and the Google docs?)

2. I translated some dialogues (UTF8 OK).

3. How can I test it? I have Dreamaker_XP4.9.1.exe in the directory where to the moon.exe is, but this says:

  Warning DMKW_Unknown_Project_Type *41* :
Impossible to determine if folder Data contains a RM project.
You must place DreaMaker.exe in your RM game's folder.
Press Enter to continue

What should be the next step?

Thanks!

You need a developer version of the game to insert the translations (seperation into a Data/Graphics/Audio Folder etc.)
If you don't have one, you will have to contact Reives about this.

I connected to my old email account and saw a notification for this thread. I'm glad to see people are still using DreaMaker. :)

I also see that I received a MP from fcoldstar from almost 2 years (2013 February), I'm copy pasting the answer publically so other people can see it.

Quote from: fcoldstar
Hello, I have translated several games such as Yume2kki and Ib made by RM2000.  I found DMK a very useful tool.
However, the new version 4.9.1 can't read RM2000 games any more.  The version 3.8 can do so, but it cannot read text included in common events, items, etc.  Neither can it read the text in"Change Hero Name" command.
Will these prolems be fixed in new version of DMK?  About what time will it be released?

Thank you very much for your hard work on this tool!

DreaMaker XP 4.9.1 is the last version of DreaMaker, and it's compatible only with DreaMaker XP.
RM2K / RM2K3 have a completely different data structure, so it's not compatible at all with DreaMaker XP. However, DreaMaker could be adapted to work with RMVX / RMVX Ace projects.

I'm no longer updating DreaMaker, but the full source code is available in the archive of the last version DreaMaker XP 4.9.1(just install the software and look inside the various folders).

I spent around 3 000 hours on DreaMaker (I worked on it every day, even during lunch during several years and write down every hour in my logs).

In fact I quit the RPG Maker development around 2009, because it was a passion rather than a real job ; it wasn't possible to me to make money from this job, no matter how many time I put into it. And it was before people heard about indie games (before Braid and Minecraft).
I came back a bit to help Reives and SenorKaffee (german translator) by making new versions of DreaMaker.

Then I continued my studies and worked 3 years as a professional video game developer (business and communication) on an heroic fantasy RPG named Prodigy (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/121511007/prodigy-the-game) (I made all the structure of the Kickstarter presentation and all the business model of the Kickstarter rewards) (I'm a crowdfunding specialist by the way).

Now I'm working on an indie game, a sandbox god game with spaceships and robotics AI, entirely made of cubes.

The full album (http://imgur.com/a/oJQWr?gallery)

I'm still friend with a lot of french indie makers, and I'm working with some of them to create a french indie scene to put our games on (RPG Maker / Multimedia Fusion / Unity / etc). My game and the french indie scenes are my two main activities, I'm working full time on them.

So as you can see, my work is no longer directly related to RPG Maker.
There would still be some important work to do on DreaMaker like managing asian characters, but I'm no longer available to do it. Feel free to use the source code of DreaMaker, and if you have questions I can still answer it (I still remember how the main parts of the stuff work). :)

I saw from far that Reives is still making games, I hope things will go well for him, the team, the fans and all the translators. :D
