Title: Test version of TML v2
Post by: Reives on September 09, 2011, 12:53:32 AM
I already tested through it once, so hopefully it's fairly clean already. It's still about 20-30 min to play through; there aren't that many changes from the original version, but the few that did make their way in there are fairly effective, I think. Also, full mouse system is implemented just like To the Moon. :)
For those who're up for it, here it is!  :pewpewpew:

The Mirror Lied v.2.1 test version: www.freebirdgames.com/TML_tv2.rar (http://www.freebirdgames.com/TML_tv2.rar)

After you finish it once, you should also be able to access the Quintessence: Lost Chapter from Lullaby when starting the game again.

So what's going to decide when the non-test version gets released? O_o

I just played it! The mouse controls work really well for it. (Does the mouse script have someone you should credit? All I saw was Dubealex.) And those new touches were great! The water and the bear and the bed. I don't want to spoil it too much, but it was really good. I still have no clue what happened, though...

Oh yeah, the mouse script credit! Totally forgot about that -- on it now. Nice catch Merlan.

And mepwnn, the non-test version's getting released as soon as the test version gets tested. :P Hopefully everything'll be ready tomorrow.

Gave it a go had some trouble loading a game from the title screen using keys. If I click continue with the mouse the load screen displays immediately. If I press spacebar or enter on continue it doesn't work.
-If I exit from the load screen the title graphic disappears and says 'this is a glitch'  XD
-near the end when I was upstairs the clock starts chiming and the phone starts ringing  so I race downstairs but when I go down the staircase the timer and the phone stops even though I have 5 secs left.
- When you walk up the stairs, at the very top leah's graphic becomes overlapped by the staircase rails
- I don't get whats supposed to happen at the end of the extra lost chapter game. I survived the wall of  and reached  :hatsale!: but I can't do anything after that. I can't even exit properly.

Nice new additions made the game even more creeepier.

Why can I get two empty buckets? ???

Also, I got the access card, but I still can't use the computer for some reason. Is this a bug or did something change?

EDIT: Alright, finished it! The water and the bed are so creepy, it's even more like a horror show now.

Ahh, thanks for the reports guys!

@Blink:
Oops, so there wasn't even any text at the end of the lost chapter game? That part was supposed to be the end of the game, but it was supposed to point blatantly to To the Moon, then auto-exit; I'll get that checked out.

@Kirro:
Ah, forgot to take away the buckets now that there's a 2nd living room map (one with smashed table). As for the computer -- what was the problem (could you click on the comp but it said you didn't have the card, or not interact with it at all)? And how did you end up getting past that part?

Added the scripts credit. Also adding a Suggestions credit to Freebird Games Community and Thunderbird, since the bed idea was implemented.

In To the Moon, though, everyone who beta'ed will show up in the credits by name. c:

It gets about halfway through extracting, and then it crashes D: I'm going to try downloading it again; I'll let you know what happens.

EDIT: ...okay, I didn't have to redownload it, it says it just finished extracting. Hopefully everything's okay!

EDIT2(for bugs and thoughts) :
-In the room with the computer, the books on the table say they can be examined, but you can't.
-Already, the cursor is a bit annoying. The beginning of the game has so much black screen, the cursor sticks out like a sore thumb. Is there any way to disable that for awhile?
---It's especially annoying cuz the cursor can still tell what kind of events are underneath it when the custscene is going on.
- I really like the longer TML theme. It's good, cuz we get through the whole intro without the BGM repeating itself four times :P
-Did you make her move faster?
-While the messed-up To Realize on the piano was kind of a neat nod to Quintessence before, I think the TML theme works better. Every player will have the potential to recognize the song; also, the clip for the messed up To Realize had already been used in Quintessence, so it was kind of cheap :P
-Can I just carry this bear around indefinitely? :o That little girl is awesome if she can carry a bear and a filled bucket of water and all these keys (and play the piano) at the same time :P
-Woah, that painting is blank O_O
-They're aaaaaaaaaaaall going blank! :o
-I think the 'hi, leah, it's 3:26' call is glitchy. I heard the clock toll (which generally means that a phonecall is about to call if I'm not mistaken), but then it never did. As soon as I went upstairs, though, it started ringing, and the timer went on. I went downstairs, the timer disappeared, but it kept ringing.
-Dude, a phonecall with only two seconds wait? (In the fire?) Is that the one that just said 'go ahead and sleep it off' or whatnot?
---Oh, okay, I caught it when it wasn't ringing. That's the one.
-I like that you got rid of her HP/MP/Stats and stuff. Kind of useless, so... yeah.
-Woah, she fell down onto the table O_O I knew that was one of the suggestions, but that was just unexpected! Nice graphical edit, too.
-If the teddybear is where the giant hole is formed, does it just go to its other position when there's a hole in the floor?
-After the fire, is that water red? :seraisweat:
-I got the same thing as Kirro. Got the access card, but it says I can't access the computer. ...Actually, it says it twice.
---...Until I get the new eMail, then everything is fine.
-Okay, yeah, that water is red now O_O Wow, Reives. NOT a horror game... but there may be some blood :P And possible suicide, I suppose...
-So... there's something about wearing the black dress at that ending scene that makes it even creepier...

Wow. Nice job, Reives. I really never get tired of that game, it seems like you always notice new things. And this time there were even new things to notice! :D

EDIT3: I'm a noob, so I died at the Retro vacation... and it froze the game. The cursor won't even move while I have the game window up.

Whoo, thanks for the awesome detailed comments Vash!

I'm fixing the bugs now, but hm, about the access card not working -- was it the case that you never touched the computer until you got the access card? I'm looking at the code now and that seems like a likely loophole on my part.

If I can make a suggestion, could you disable the five rowed dresser once all of the drawers are empty so that it simply says there's nothing in there, like the other dressers? I can't remember when it happened in the game, but I was looking for what to do next and I think I searched all of the drawers again and they were all empty. It would be nice to just say that the whole thing's empty once you clear it out.

And what's the secret code on the painting? I was really hoping that would come into play.

Also, I died against the invading army at the end of Retro Vacation. How do you win?

I think that just there to make us speculate and adds to the wtf factor.

Oh I just hold down the arrow key and charge through them XD Somehow I survive with four hearts left over after the barge through. Even though the max health limit is four hearts, if I have max health and collect extra hearts my health doesn't go down if I get hurt.

Yeah, that's what happened. Since I've played before, I kinda knew what I was doing already, so I didn't bother looking at the computer until I had the keycard I knew I needed.

I had to leave the room and the computer say that I have mail before I can use the access card.

Ahh yep, that makes sense -- I just fixed it then. :D

@Blink & The # on the painting: I think someone on the discussion thread found what it referenced before. It's not something that has any directly relevance to game mechanics, but it's not random.

@Merlan: True, I'll do that. I also just took off the "There're 5 rows . . . Search?" dialogue after the first time it happened, since it gets repetitive.

Also, you cannot win against the army of Sal.

So, if that number has no actual effect on gameplay, does that mean you can beat the game without ever stepping in that room? A useless number and some stale bread?

Thank you. That got really annoying.

And what was that about the order the paintings disappeared in? I didn't pay too much attention, but if it has to do with a date, I probably wouldn't know what it's referring to anyways :P Anyone wanna help a lazy person out? XD

Let me know whenever some other annoying things like that happen so I can fix it! :P

Hahah, pretty much. Though to be fair, it's not entirely useless for those who want some more concrete stamp on what the game meant, since it's one of the few things in there that actually has an objective trace of what it references. The game really isn't about gameplay anyhow; e.g. holding the bear has no effect on any mechanisms either, but hopefully it had some psychological effects and all that shenanigans.

(Self-phantomization!)

... Weren't you going to throw the TtM trailer in here? Or did I misunderstand that?
Title: Re: Test version of TML v2
Post by: Reives on September 09, 2011, 11:27:59 PM
See, that's why I gotta stop talking. :P I really want it to be something that's completely open, but I did have a certain path to make everything seem to fit to an extent -- I mean, even for these things, if you just throw in a bunch of completely random things it'd probably be too messy for even the illusion of something. So yes, there're certain things in there that were hinted at certain things, but I don't want that to lock anything down.

. . .Uh, this post might get phantomized in the near future.

Anyhow, the TtM trailer was going to be on it, but then it bumped the file size to 30mb; I wanted to keep TML really lightweight, so that went out the window. D:

Oh yes I was aware of that theory it was just never confirmed (until now) so we were left to speculate as to what the theme of the game was about.

Also, you cannot win against the army of Sal.

Huh? Do you mean you fixed it?

So I played through the uh, official thing. And here's what I think about it. Note: I don't think it's going to be very positive ._.

Spoiler: show

I do notice all the new changes, like the teddy bear, the bed crashing, the red water, and the blank paintings... Yeah, they are changes and all, but really? That's it? I'm pretty sure I was expecting waaaaay more O_o That might be just me, but be honest here, did anyone feel like the changes added any new theories to the story, or favored a particular set over the others? Sure, red water might equal death, but hey. Leah disappeared at the end or something. I like the teddy bear and that might add a cute side to Leah and I found myself trying to stand it back up over and over again after the fire, but honestly... that could have been fleshed out SO much more, but it wasn't. Honestly disappointed.

Are there any new plot devices? Any new text or dialog? Nope. Did I miss a secret ending? Probably, but that feels highly unlikely, given the lack of any revolutionary changes. Hidden themes? Not any new ones that weren't there originally (come on, you can't say that red water = Leah is super aggressive).

Also, the piano tune doesn't sound much like TtM to me. Maybe because it's a mess up, but, unless it's just an Easter egg, it doesn't promote TtM. At least the To Realize mess up still sounded like To Realize ._. This isn't right. I'm stupid.

To sum it all up, I feel like this was really a rushed release. I really feel disappointed in that I couldn't tell if I was still playing the original TML or not. There are just so few changes to the game that I don't think it warranted a re-release. The red water feels thrown in and there still is that pretty much empty room with the random date (which, by the way, is the date of the nuclear bomb test in New Mexico. Derp).

Final Verdict: What's new? Nothing I can see.

I thought the themes on the piano were from The Mirror Lied, not TtM. Is my ear malfunctioning?

I think the only thing that a re-release entails is that it gets released again. Any added content after that is a bonus. Considering that any re-released game would be lucky to get 5% new material, a 20 minute game like TML has just the right amount of new material while not disturbing what made people love it in the first placed. If a game this short was jam-packed with much more new material, it would be called a remake, not a re-release.

Maybe I'm the only one who had this mindset, but when I caught wind of a re-released TML, I didn't imagine anything new or spectacular popping out that wasn't there before. I suppose that naivety on my part saved me the disappointment that mepwnn seems to have felt. The few new bits that were added came as pleasant surprises for me.

Hm, but yeah, I might've given out the wrong expectations -- there was a thread made compiled with a lot of suggestions after all. But at one point afterwards, I said that there might not be time for many changes at all this time 'round due to the need to catch up with To the Moon's schedule.

Overall, this particular re-release is a preparation to launch it at a wider audience to cross-promote To the Moon (the mouse control's a fairly important aspect for some new potential audiences). Sorry for the disappointment mepwnn! One day in the future though, there may be a revamp with a lot of the other awesome potentials implemented. :)

I like the changes in this new version, and the bonus minigame from dyrml.
Weird, I wasn't able to find any kind of bugs.
