Title: Adbots and Spambots
Post by: Rayen on June 27, 2011, 11:11:54 PM
In less than a week, I had to ban a couple users for posting ads in the Intro threads and Game Dev. board. I can't remember, but do we have a protective measure upon registering for bots like other forums do? If not, could we add one? >_> I've seen forums using captchas and simple math problems as anti-bot defenses. I've even seen a forum downright ask if the registering user was a bot, lol..

So yeah.. anti-bot field in register form, please?

I'm pretty sure we are using some form of anti-bot field at the moment; I think it's a simple multiplication question. Oddly, it functioned way better than captcha -- I'm not sure if there's a sort of bot-hack for the captcha, but they were able to get through the most gruesome captchas. There was a torrent of bot problem at Shigi's forum a couple of weeks ago too, but after I switched it to the multiplication question it seems to have stopped.

Has it been happening all along with you swift-banning them, or did it just start this week? o:

I just noticed it starting this week. Banned within 3 days of each other.

Let me know if you're still experiencing this problem... I will take a look.  :)

Sorry for the bump (maybe I shouldn't do this), but I'll take the opportunity to mention that I've enhanced the forum registration's anti-spam measures.

I've been seeing some spambot activity lately, and that shouldn't be happening.  :x

Now that we are seeing a flood of KitchenBots, I suggest forum admins to review current anti-spam measures.
Currently it seems to consist of captcha and one verification question (What season comes before Summer?).
I read this wiki article on SMF:
http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Spam_-_my_forum_is_flooded_with_spam,_what_can_I_do (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Spam_-_my_forum_is_flooded_with_spam,_what_can_I_do)

And here are some suggestions:
- The current verification question should be changed to something else as it is obvious that KitchenBots have been trained about seasons. :)
- The wiki article mentions the possibility of using several questions and showing them in random. I guess this one is going to be most effective:

From the Administration Center it's possible to set as many questions you want, and also the number of questions that each user will be asked to fill during the registration. If you configure 10 questions and then set to show 2 in the registration page, SMF will show two random questions from the 10 configured each time a new member tries to register - a good bank of questions will stop automated bots from building a set of "known answers".

you could do it manually.

have a provisional member class for new members who are limited to posting in an intro thread.
once they make a post in the intro thread, forum moderators manually promote their account to a proper/normal account.
if their first post is about kitchens, then... well... yeah.

Don't oppress the bots! Is it wrong to share your kitchens with others? Don't their feelings mean anyhing?
