"Hate me. Please just hate me. And forgive everyone else."

Astral Transparency: Cole's Gate is a fantasy RPG game with multiple endings.

(https://freebirdgames.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw129%2FKirroha%2Fstory.jpg&hash=b270f2d96d26ef03d9de1050b662f4b1)
A child whose existence shrouds the world.
Something like that shouldn't have been left alive.
... It's all just too cruel.

Genre: Fantasy, drama, thriller, some romance.

Fifteen years ago marked the beginning of the end.

A country at the verge of war with another postponed its plans thanks to the arrival of a strange young man on a canoe, here to tell them that he would give it all up for the sake of the person he cares for. And then, he realized that it was too late to back out. At that time, a young woman discovered a life-draining, world-ending artifact. She accepted no credit for her discovery. Two years later, the first revolution began. Many died. A man named Dave Shrubalt was killed.

A woman told her son, they were to destroy a monster who killed innocent people in cold blood just to fulfill his own desires. It has been ingrained within his mind since he was five. It was trapping, traumatizing, and utterly restrictive. She was a mother who sacrificed her love for her own son just for revenge. He never would have been able to regain the life he could have lived. And for that very purpose, he sought the Cole's Gate - that cold, cruel artifact which would drain the world of all life. And that is where one story ends and another begins. He will meet that person, and there will be no turning back.

Actually, there was never any turning back in the first place.

(For images, as well as more characters, go to the main site (http://soyasushiproductions.wordpress.com).)

Ray Shrubalt

One of the main protagonists, a young man who works with his mother as a servant to the governor of Sydea, a capable man named Alben Lapurett. What Lord Lapurett does not know, however, is his last name and his lineage - he is a decent swordsman who can make use of light magic, a powerful element but one that is limited a sense. Unlike traditional mages like Valoria who use their inherent magic supply on weak elemental spells, light spells will deplete magic from the user so strongly that it will never be replenished, and if used too much would kill said user. He inherited this ability from his late father, Sir Dave, an old knight of Lord Lapurett's court.

???
Fifteen years ago, a man named Cole Larens stumbled upon the artifact of death which would later be called the Cole's Gate. He led a cult worshiping that power, in a mad feat to bring about an apocalypse, or so they say. The Forest of Death, where the Cole's Gate is located, is closer to Sydea than any other city. This is the teenager who claims to be that man, to a torn and tired Ray Shrubalt one achingly painful dawn.

Valoria Lapurett
A charming and capable young lady who is the sole daughter of Lord Alben Lapurett, governor of Sydea. She is a semi-skilled mage who can wield the elements of ice, wind and earth, all to a rather limited extent. She gets along well with the servants, and is friendly and charismatic. Her mother, Liana Lapurett, died a little more than three years prior to the story due to what the public knew as an illness.

Janelle Emerleaf
A young, cheerful maid of the Lapurett house, who works for the governor along with her older brother, Lorenzo Emerleaf. Sometimes, she tends to have her head in the clouds, and sometimes, she can be surprisingly down-to-earth. She holds a keen interest in the abstract, and has an affinity with numbers. Speed is her strong suit, and her ability to get chores done at record speed is rather impressive.

Simon
A young man who supposedly had a message for Lord Lapurett from the capital city, Nivandrox, from which Sydea was made independent of less than two decades ago. He knows his court manners and his flattery, but behind the backs of nobility he can be quite the annoying lout.

"Tom"
A strange mercenary whom Valoria met in a cave not far from Sydea's outskirts. He appears to have some kind of link with the Cole's Gate.

In-Game Areas

The City of Sydea
Sydea has been independent from the main capital of Nivandrox for around twenty years. The governor of the city is Governor Alben Lapurett, and due to how disastrously close the city is to the Forest of Death, it has caused much worry to him.

The Forest of Death
The forest of death is the nickname of the place where the Cole's Gate resides. Due to its disastrous influence, many have suffered in this short time of over fifteen years. It is also the residence of its cult, lead by Cole, that possesses the power to manipulate darkness.

Affected Area
The Cole's Gate is said to be able to reduce the entire continent into a lifeless land mass in a mere century by absorbing the life energy of everything around it. So far, the area around it that has been destroyed it called the affected area, and nobody dares to step within these grounds.

The Kingdom of Nivandrox
Nivandrox is a flourishing capital, led by King Anryens. They are located across the Forest of Death from Sydea, though there is a roundabout way around the Affected Area that allows messengers from both cities to make contact. King Anryens hasn't contacted Sydea much since its separation, but then the arrival of the mysterious visitor Simon seems to counter that.

The Kingdom of Palendine
A country across the ocean. Tension between Palendine and Nivandrox has been fluctuating, almost turning into a full-blown war around fifteen years ago, but prevented due to Nivandrox stocking up their supplies after receiving advance notice. This tension has yet to break into war so far.

I've found a suitable spot to cut the game, but I'm not sure if I should release a demo yet.

I also edited the first post's summary to better reflect the plot.

If you're talking about how completed the game is, the only answer I have is barely. :P It'll be something like just Chapter I out of the whole Quintessence. But demos are usually there to provide a sneak peek of the game after all.

Played! I quite enjoyed it, can't wait for its completion.

Praise:
-*Loved* your character art. It's very well done. Especially the last scene- I hope there are a lot more of those throughout the game! I also liked the custom sprites, quite well done.
-Although I can't really judge the story, demo was too short, I had some mixed feelings. I think my issues would be resolved when I play more, so overall, I'd say it's good. (Btw, is Cole a girl or a guy? I honestly can't tell o.o)

Criticism:
-Maps aren't bad, but could be improved. I think a little more detail would be nice. :)

Pretty short demo, but it was enjoyable, will definitely play the full game.

I had to map everything myself, so yeah, I definitely have room for improvement. :)

Thanks for the critique, silver!

I played the Demo...I simply loved the story!
I cant wait for the next one...!

Your handmade faces were amazing but i was wondering if you would make their background transparent,
In my opinion they would look even better with a transparent background like that green haired servant girl.
(sorry i forgot her name ...i played the game 2 days ago but my internet was not available back then...so i have forgotten a few things)

Maps could be improved a little.
The menu system ( or whatever its called) was beautiful!.

Post by: Vasha on February 17, 2011, 06:00:56 PM
As I do with a lot of games that need editing, I'm gonna post as I see 'em:

title screen. Looks good, though the crystal sprites need some work. It's especially noticeable with the black one. The size of the grid isn't big enough, so there wasn't enough room for a fading effect in the crystal glow and it just cuts off. At least, that's what I'm assuming is happening.
Intro. Did the music just cut out suddenly and then start playing again like a second later? :o
In the scene where the guy is running away from the guards, there's a period of time after the guards show up where they don't do anything before they separate.
I really like the music.
And the menu system! Did you make that yourself? :o (One thing I should mention, though. When you go back a menu (like from the magic menu to the main menu), the menu bars slide back in instead of just showing up. It's technically fine, but it might get annoying after awhile to have to keep waiting for the menu to set itself up again everytime you go back a menu? If that makes sense? just a suggestion, though)
Mmmm, two things about the waking people up thing: 1) Everyone is sleeping with their eyes open. 2) you talk to the chef and everyone just magically wakes up and teleports out of their bed? :salbrow: It'll take a bit more eventing, but it looks a lot better to be able to talk to everyone and actually have them walk out of bed :P
You do it again when you talk to Vincent(?) Don't have people magically teleport! Unless, of course... they can teleport? But i should know that if they can :seraisweat:
I like the conversation with Lorenzo :D
This is somewhat just my taste, but if I walk up a door, I shouldn't come out a door in the next map facing down ::)
If I run into the gate at the way bottom of the castle(?), then walk left after the scene, she still says not to run in the door. this can easily be fixed by checking a condition whether or not the player is facing down, or just moving the event down one tile (and putting it on collision?)
From there, If I go out the first door to my left, I go outside (facing right ::)). If I walk down one square, it takes me back to where I just came from.

Gotta go for now. More feedback later!

Thanks for the comments ^^

@talia: Sorry I can't make the background transparent, since there are also other white parts of the picture, and it isn't really clean enough to make transparency out of. So I've left it as it is. And the menu system wasn't made by myself ^^

@vasha: For most of the edits you are requesting, I appreciate them but being the noob I am, I'm at a loss of how to do anything about them. ^^;
- teleporting out of bed: I was lazy, and it was supposed to be comic relief anyway (as seen by Ray going "Wow, that was fast") :P
- for the castle going right and left, it's because those doors are left and right from the main gate respectively, but you're coming out from the side with the back gate. So it's switched horizontally.
Title: Re: Astral Transparency: Cole's Gate - Demo Updated!
Post by: Vasha on February 18, 2011, 05:43:52 PM
I have a bit of experience with RMXP (not as much as Reives and all that, of course, but still some :P) So I think I may be able to help with some of it? What kind of stuff exactly don't you know how to do?
-Teleporting out of bed: Nnn, it was a bit funny, but it seems kind of like it's not really supposed to be a funny game, so it was a bit out of place.
-for the castle going right and left: if it's the back door... well, first of all, it looks like it's next to the front door. And if it's the back door, why don't you just have the map rotated (so the left door is actually on the left side of the map and the right door is actually on the right side of the map? :P)

I hope you don't mind me being frank, but I think to me the worst part was seeing so much RTP used, largely because after you've played dozens of games it gets boring. My favorite map in the entire game was the Naramura one, as the frosted effect she used just seemed so fitting, where quite a few of the other maps I could have been playing any game I'd played before, it didn't seem to connect me to *your* game. Seeing as there are a lot of free resources in the Internet that are of much higher quality than RTP, I think there should be something which suits your game better. I have a lot of links in case you do want to go that route and don't mind having a little more mapping to do. If you do, perhaps finding recolors of your existing stuff would work. Quintessence used a lot of recolors of RTP yet I never felt bored or tired when looking at the mapping.

I'll still play the game regardless as the story is good.

Oh well it doesn't really matter :P
i am waiting anxiously for the next demo because i loved the story.

i remembered another thing..I am just giving my personal opinion i may be wrong...hope you wont mind...
when the traveler appears he just stands in front of the king during the whole day...you cant talk to him or anything..he even stands there when control shifts to green haired maid...ummm that kind of seams boring to me...
they could at least me saying something..
and there is this guy in the throne room ( or whatever its called) who just keeps saying hey my name is Lorenzo i think it kind of gets lame...maybe you could use self-switches to add something such as i know shut up...or etc ..

its really just my opinion ...about some little things...

I loved the story.....i am waiting impatiently to know what will happen next :P

@silversun: Perhaps, but I'm really bad when it comes to working with tilesets in the database. This is why I only make use of RTP tilesets. It'll be much better if someone could help me with the mapping.

@talia: Sure, I'll do something about them.

I'd volunteer, but I suck at actual mapping myself. Although I could try piecing together a few non-RTP tilesets for you if you'd like.

I'll get started then. Would you prefer a a brown-based tileset that seems more "manorly" or a blue/green based tileset that's more "castlely"? I have more brown-based tiles, so you'll have more freedom/detail if you go that route. (Assuming you like the tileset.... :seraisweat:)

Also:

It was supposed to be comic relief anyway (as seen by Ray going "Wow, that was fast") :P

You could achieve the same comedic affect by using the highest walk speed, while making it more realistic than teleportation.

Everyone is sleeping with their eyes open.

This good enough? Alternatively, ask an actual spriter to do this rather than a noob who's using a template. :P

This is absolutely nitpicking, so feel free to ignore, but the profiles would look a lot more professional if they were in a window called "Profiles" rather than in the items section.

Oh and one last thing: roughly what time period would this equal irl? So I know whether to add things like lamps or not.

Forgot to check that...I haven't used RMXP in forever.  :seraisweat:

But it was meant to check the template's quality anyways, so if it was good enough I could use it on the sprites which don't have a suitable down sprite.

I'm not too sure about that... Because after all, the player could speak to the person from any angle and thus the person might bump into the player on the way out. But if it bothers you that much...

@eyesopen: Many RPGs do do that *cough*Aveyond*cough* So I didn't find it much of a problem at first.

Alright, here's a simple manor exterior, if you like it, I'll go ahead and make an interior. The tileset isn't too detailed because it's only going to be used for one map, right? If there's anything you want to remove/replace/add, just let me know and I'll see what I can do. If you dislike it, I'll just post it on the RM board, but otherwise, credit Venetia, Wyatt, Lillith, $t3v0, The Inquisitor, and ccoa. Don't credit me, as I didn't do anything but put it together.

Spoiler: Tileset • show

And here's a very quickly made map using it. It's very rudimentary and undetailed, you can do far better than this. Just an example.

Thanks, and I'll love an interior too. ^^ But the problem is that I don't know how to put it together in the database, with the priorities and passabilities and all those confusing things.

EDIT: Also, I don't know how to do scripting, so how do I add a profile section?

Here (http://www.rmxp.tigerseye.uk.com/tutorial_data9.shtml) is a tutorial for configurations and stuff.

Will start on an interior, then.

Edit: Started on an interior. Will likely take me longer than the exterior because of school. But just to let you know where it's headed:

Thanks for the trouble :) One thing I'd definitely end up needing is the wall outline autotile, though ^^; Can't live without it hurr. And some vertical/horizontal stairs, since I'm not talented like Reives.

Can I also have the shadows of the external tileset removed as well, by the way? It stands out too much.

Not quite sure what you mean by this...? Wouldn't you add the autotile through the autotile, or are you asking for an autotile which would fit it?

Sorry I took so long on this, I was pretty busy throughout the week. Please let me know if there's anything you'd like me to add/remove/replace/edit, I didn't add as much as I could have since I wanted to finish it in a reasonable amount of time. Also, my computer with RMXP on it broke down so idk if there are any issues with it in RMXP, please let me know if there are.

Thank you very much for the help :) I'll contact you if I need anything else. Do you have forest tilesets, by any chance?

Added a caterpillar into the game.

Mm, just the pieces, unedited together?

Also, jungle, light forest, dark forest, or autumn forest?
