Title: Origami Challenge: Paper Rabbit (inspired by To the Moon)
Post by: Rayen on October 01, 2010, 08:09:32 PM
Edit by Reives:
This is the exact paper rabbit River was folding in the game - give it a try!
Also, Rayen here is the artist for the memento pictures, including the rabbit.

Still having trouble folding the rabbit? Check out this YouTube video:

You could also make simpler rabbits, but if you made this one, that'd be awesome. XD

I want to try it, but I don't have any origami paper at home.. I only have some yellow A4 sheets - do you think cutting them to a square will do?

BTW, I know how to fold origami, but I never did it after English foldplans - what are "valley fold" and "mountain fold"? xD

Post by: Rayen on October 02, 2010, 02:18:15 PM
Whoa, that rabbit origami's awesome! And it uses two sheets, so it can be multi-coloured. o: I'll be trying it. And post what you did with it, Rayen! (as well as the singing clip; that goes without saying.)

It only uses 1 sheet. I couldn't find any multi-sheet/color ones. I'll not show my failure of a rabbit! >: I quit 5 steps from the end. I got frustrated with the size of the sheet I was working with. (Buh. Why my singing, too?)

I made the bunny. It isn't as cool as the design Rayen posted. But it's a bunny.
And I suck at some origami.

Holy crap, that's actually really awesome looking! How long did it take?? And hm, is it possible to do it with a large piece of construction paper? It's harder than regular paper, and I'm not sure if it'd create any difficulties in folding.
Title: Re: Origami Challenge: Paper Rabbit (inspired by To the Moon)
Post by: Rayen on October 06, 2010, 09:20:39 PM
You know.. I don't know how long it took me. XD I wasn't paying attention to the time. Maybe sometime within an hour?

I think it'd be a ~little~ more difficult with construction paper, since its thickness would probably make it harder to fold and inverse/reverse fold. But I guess a square sheet of construction paper bigger than 8"x8" would make that easier to deal with.

Now I'm curious. I'll make my next rabbit out of that. d:

Oh, that's pretty fast then. o: Dude(tte), now I wanna make a HUGE one out of a giant piece of yellow construction paper! And btw I think you should make an activity thread where it challenges everyone to fold a paper rabbit and take a pic of it or something. :D

Uh.. An 8.5x8.5" square sheet gave me a rabbit ~ 4" tall.

It's no coincidence. When I made that thing, I thought... "Llama, damn it." But the actual folded ones that the person makes look more like the rabbit.

I can't find the original, but there was a picture with five rabbits, all a slight variation on this type, that I used to model the rabbit I drew. The tail was a little different. A lot less llama-like. But I forgot to save the picture and now I can't find it. ???

It is on the third link with the different line and fold defininitions, but just a bit vague.

Title: Re: Origami Challenge: Paper Rabbit (inspired by To the Moon)
Post by: Rayen on October 08, 2010, 04:41:39 PM
Bring the part with the black arrow up, open up the little gap the big white arrow's pointing at, and then squash it so it looks like 18.
Title: Re: Origami Challenge: Paper Rabbit (inspired by To the Moon)
Post by: Reives on October 08, 2010, 04:57:31 PM
Squash the gap the white arrow is pointing at? What do I do with the little triangle part that's still at the bottom?

Ack, I think at this point there's a lot of misalignments that make my paper skewed, and they add up - I think I'm gonna start again being more careful. |: This is serious business.
Title: Re: Origami Challenge: Paper Rabbit (inspired by To the Moon)

Post by: Reives on October 08, 2010, 05:01:46 PM
The pocket that can be squashed into is divided in 2; would either one of them do? Or did I make a mistake earlier and it's supposed to be a single pocket in there?

P.S. I'm back with a new piece of paper and vengeance - it's more squarely than any paper I've folded before!

P.S. Nice ring; how does it look in the middle?
Title: Re: Origami Challenge: Paper Rabbit (inspired by To the Moon)
Post by: Rayen on October 08, 2010, 05:50:33 PM
It ~should~ be more or less symmetrical. The creases of the little triangle should be aligned down the middle of the recently squashed part.

The middle of my ring?
Title: Re: Origami Challenge: Paper Rabbit (inspired by To the Moon)
Post by: Reives on October 08, 2010, 05:57:05 PM
Oh yes, but I meant that whole bottom part was folded up to the front - I thought it was supposed to be spread to both sides.

And yeah, middle/front of the ring.

Edit: Holy crap, that's a HUGE jump from 19 to 20. ._o

Edit2: Nevermind, it wasn't that bad.
Title: Re: Origami Challenge: Paper Rabbit (inspired by To the Moon)
Post by: Rayen on October 08, 2010, 06:08:09 PM
XD It's not that big of a jump. Just need to fold that side in half and down (don't forget to fold out that little pocket to the right, too) and then rotate it 180 degrees.

School ring as in the school gave it out for the students?

And eep, now I'm stuck at 22->23; I tried laying the end panel out but it's stretching so it won't squash flat.

Edit: Nevermind, got it!
Title: Re: Origami Challenge: Paper Rabbit (inspired by To the Moon)
Post by: Rayen on October 08, 2010, 06:21:15 PM
Yeah, that part's pretty tricky.

Not necessarily gave it out. We had to pay for it. A ring company that specializes in making school/class rings goes to high schools every year and hands out catalogues to the students in their sophomore (?) year, depicting all the ring designs, metals, stones and little characters (i.e. my two angels) to put in the black ovals if the ring design has them. I ~think~ my ring totaled somewhere between 2-300$

That's the exact part where my head exploded and my rabbit turned into a paper ball. It was like the sides were too tight to make it flat. And as for that tiny triangle on the bottom you are supposed to flatten in step 20, I didn't have one...  ???

Okay, this is my third bub-bun, and I'm still getting stuck on the same spot! RAWR!
This is how it looks on step 21-22:

I try to complete 22 to make it look like 23:

It is just too tight to pull flat like the picture shows. I have no clue where this extra slack is supposed to come from. Am I doing this wrong? Now I know how the creators of Paper Mario feel...

It's entirely possible to do step 23, it's just somewhat tedious. If you want, I can show you a way to kind of side-step step 23 and move on to 24. Just need to charge my camera a bit.

I know exactly what you mean by "it's too tight to pull flat" - I scratched my head at that too. I think you're not supposed to pull flat. Just bring that surface out and tighten it, then look at step 24 instead and try to get it to that directly.

I DID IT! *Whew*

Now I stand shoulder to shoulder with Rayen and Reives in their bunny-making glory.

@ Rayen: I think I made some grave error somewhere, because that gif you made showing me how to do step 38 has a flat line where you stick your finger under it. My bun-bun (bottom-right picture) had a triangular bit. (Unless I still somehow managed not to understand... :'( ) It didn't stop me from proclaiming myself VICTORIOUS!

I also threw in some other bunny pals I made in frustration...

Ooh, nice, Merlan! Paper rabbits unite! I'm gonna try to make a big one out of coloured construction paper later.

@Mela: No worries, it's pretty confusing in more manners than one - the instructions are just chaos when you're not familiar with origami guides.

@Rayen: Yeah, that would be totally awesome if you made a guide! I'd probably sticky it on the TtM board after the game gets released too. :P

Just finished taking all the pictures for the GIF guide. Just barely got the last shot of the rabbit before the battery died. XD

Expect the gif sometime within the next 1-3 hours. Need to re-charge the battery, thread together the photos, add commentary, and upload it.

While I'm waiting for it to recharge, do you guys think I should divide it up into 4 different gifs, 10 steps each, 7~10 seconds per step? Or divide it up into, like.. 8 gifs, 5 steps each, 3~5 seconds/step? Or something different?
Title: Re: Origami Challenge: Paper Rabbit (inspired by To the Moon)

Shorter gifs are prob better, since it's easier to follow that way. o: And whoo, looking forward to it! Although I made one, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna forget some of the steps the next time and struggle again, so this'll help. :P

I agree with Reives: the shorter ones. I'm excited. Maybe more people will be willing to make the rabbits and we can form a PAPER BUNNY ARMADA!!! XD

And also, I want to see how you got that straight flap where mine was triangular.  ??? It's a good idea, Rayen.

RAYEN! You're my hero!

I'm working on a song called Folding Paper Bunnies in honor of, well, folding paper bunnies. My good headphones broke so I won't have it finished until my new ones come in the mail... Anyways, would it be alright if I turned your GIFs into an instructional video with my bunny song? It would be like a collaborative project, except you had no intention of me jumping in and making a song.  :reivsweat:

The last bunny, river made, was a two colored bunny - yellow (for the moon, i guess) and blue (the sky/stars around).
Its quite different just to make an one-colored bunny... is it really possible to do a two-colored without painting it? :-)

The legs and ears are slightly out after the amount of folds in that area made it difficult to fold in those areas, I had to use pliers to squash them down a bit, because I used normal A4 paper. The only origami paper I could find near me cost £29.99 for 100 sheets imported from Japan and that is too much.

But anyway it's close enough I think.

Post it away  ;)
My twitter is @yoshienverde, my FB yoshi.en.verde. Use whichever is more comfortable for you...

Fact is I haven't done any origami folding in years, but I loved this game, and I fell on this post while looking for news on the development of the next chapter... I saw the model and I did a simple one automatically  :salbrow:

The two tone wasn't that hard... I cut a yellow triangle the same size as half the blue square (About 22cm), and then slid it down about an inch. If you follow the bunny instructions then, the yellow paper ALMOST covers the right spots... It overlaps a bit below the arms and on the neck, but it's almost undetectable  XD

I followed the basic  :seraisweat: instructions at the start of the thread.
For the dual-tone, the process is simple:

That should leave you with a square with a yellow patch in the middle. Use that to fold your rabbit. The corner with the most blue is the corner that builds the tail, while the two yellow corners are the forelegs
 :gothat!:

Looks a lot cooler than I thought it would, I thought it would just be flat. To this day To the Moon is the only game that has persuaded me to create an origami rabbit.

Yippie! I made one too!

At first attempt! But it took me all night (several hours) of trial and error, going 3 or more steps back and forth again and again until I got it right.

The paper (A4 sheet from printer, cut square) was going to give up at some points, becoming very thin with small holes and tears. (Not visible, fortunately.)

From Step 14 onwards I couldn't understand the instructions anymore and had to use the video. But even there not everything was perfectly visible or immediately understandable. So yes, I had a hard time but...

:gothat!: So happy I got one!

And it's even more unbelievable because the Origami paper has two different coloured sides and the models still come out monochrome! The guys who create these must be some kind of hosts for the ancient spirits of paperfolding art!

Well, unless there's some kind of software, like the lego designers use ::) ...but I wouldn't think so.

Thanks for the kind words . I got TtM of Steam in the holiday sales and got around playing and finishing it last weekend. It's just one of the best (if not the best) stories I've ever seen in a game. And that's from 20+ years of experience.

I figured making one of these rabbits would be a nice tribute and reminder of a game (the first game!) that moved me to do something game related outside of the game itself.

Here's my latest origami rabbit, it's about the 6th one I've tried. 3 of them actually finished. A white one that I marked with markers to determine where the colors should be. The one that couldn't stand, and now one that can   . I think I should lay of the paper now for a while... Don't want to end up with a house full of these   ;).

The blue part looks all sparkly like a starlit night sky. I love it. :-* What's your secret?

Hehe, it's not really a secret. What I did is make a plain white rabbit and colored parts of it with colored markers. I then unfolded the whole bunny, made a design in Photoshop using the background of the image below for the blue parts. Printed twosided with an inkjet printer (A4) and cut out the square, which is about 21 cm (about 8 1/4 inch).

Then I just folded the rabbit . Was also thinking of adding 2 moons for the eyes, but decided against it because it would take away the magic and the metaphor of the body.

It took me a while to find somewhere to upload it, but I did it. I had to compress it a little as the original file size was over 20MB and it's a pain in the backside to find a place that will host a file that big.

Here it is: http://tothemoon.awardspace.co.uk/origami_bunny_web.pdf (http://tothemoon.awardspace.co.uk/origami_bunny_web.pdf)

Just print on plain white paper, cut out, and follow the Youtube video.

Have fun making an authentic TtM origami bunny!   ;)

If you print this and fold right, this should give you a blue rabbit with yellow body. Backside of the paper should be completely blue. The biggest problem is that you'll need thick paper and an ink printer - Laser printed surface give white stripes when folded, and thin paper won't work well if you have to print both sides.

If someone knows a good way to print yellow on blue paper, please do tell me - this would cut down alot on ink costs and would work with thinner paper.

It took me a long time figuring out how to do step 14.. I had to reference the gif's, youtube, the instructional pictures and read through all 13 pages of this thread in case someone posted more instructions.  After I got through step 14 everything else was more clear to me.

I noticed that my rabbits don't have the hind legs sticking out like some of the other rabbits though.  I must have did something wrong along the way.  My rabbits weren't standing properly at first.  I just flattened and spread their legs out a bit more and popped up the paper flap just above their feet to keep the legs spread.  They feel very sturdy now after that.

Eeeek! I am so excited, and nervous to try this. My husband played TtM a couple of weeks ago, and then promptly had me watch a video play through of someone playing so I could see the story. Our anniversary is tomorrow [he's on a business trip though so I have more time to get it done!], I want to make him one of these rabbits. I also got him a small platypus stuffed animal.

Anyway, here are my questions. When I print out Ric's template, the two separate images mean I need to print double sided, right? And I assume the designs need to line up front to back?

Also, Which way does the paper need to be when I start? I'm nervous! someone come do this for me... :]

The corner of the template with more blue will be the head of the rabbit.  That corner of the paper will be the part where you fold the corner upwards and back before you fold the entire paper in half.

Edit: I just had to.

Aaah.. I am going nuts! I've tried so many times and just cannot get this bunny made! Furthest I've got is to the hind legs, and my paper just will not do what it's telling me to do. :/ I may have to give up
Title: Re: Origami Challenge: Paper Rabbit (inspired by To the Moon)
Post by: BoBari on July 09, 2014, 05:51:33 PM
I DID IT!!!
After giving up many times, I finally figured out what I was doing wrong and got the bunny made! I still had an issue with the hind legs, but I got them to work well enough. And although I can't find my mistake, I feel like there are 2 pieces sticking out from the cheeks that shouldn't be there... But it still looks awesome.

I still need to practice a couple of times, then I'll try it with Ric's template. Which I am so excited for!

Now I can't wait for my husband to get home from his work trip so I can give them to him!!!
Yay Me!

I would like to thank Rayen for posting this and inspiring me to make one, Ric for the awesome template, Kan Reives for making such an awesome game and the everyone here for being such an awesome little community!

If anyone is struggling with these, here are two more youtube videos explaining how to make to rabbit:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxJIbqqJDBM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxJIbqqJDBM)

The second one is part of a series of four videos on this rabbit. I prefer that one, since the creator goes very slowly and explains every step very well. I don't know if Rayen, the original poster of this thread will ever see this, but if you do, you might want to add these links to the first post, to help others make these awesome rabbits!

That's pretty good. You'll get better if you practice.

Also, to post images you need the img tags you can get by clicking on this button...

(https://freebirdgames.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Forig08.deviantart.net%2Fa037%2Ff%2F2015%2F284%2F1%2F1%2Funtitled_by_dragonmage156-d9cr30o.png&hash=651bbeb8b98f5e91abc3c68dd3e5f2fb)

and paste the url of the image in between them.

Note: Facebook/DeviantArt links won't work, they need to be the image url only.

I hope this helped.

That was an experience. I consider myself pretty clumsy by any standards...How did River mass-produce them with quality? Was it...perhaps by force of will and her burning desire to remind Johnny of their past overcame the syndrom's symptoms?

Don't worry, not everyone is good at origami (me included ^^; )

Also if you want to shrink the image (like what I've done here) there is a blue mouse icon above the writing area and emotes. If you click it, it should show the image instead of code. Click on the image and little white boxes will appear on the sides and corners. If you click and drag it, you can make the image bigger or smaller. I prefer using the corners so the picture keeps the same dimensions.

I hope this helped :)

Oh, thanks. Neither actually, sort of... There was a post earlier here with a template to print. I just printed it one sided (as you see inside the foot is still white). I only modified the blue a little because: 1. The blue was a bit more pale than the rabbit in the game and 2. As was mentioned in that post, if you laser print, edges turn white when you fold. I turned the blue to the color of a blue pen that I have and recolored the edges afterwards.
I learned some lessons (particularly on that tricky fold on the side of the head, base of the ears) and would do a better job next time but have been too busy to try again.
And it is an opportunity to thank you for such a wonderful game. Can't wait for the new one. Well, actually I can wait. Just take your time and make it as perfect as To the Moon was!

Just got an e-mail for the announcement of to the moon 2 after all these years so I decided to check back on this thread and sure enough, still here and even some somewhat recent posts :). Even more surprised that the pdf link to the template I made still works.

Glad to see that that template has still been used over the years too.
