Once upon a time, the world fell prey to a cruel demon. Azazel The Fallen ravaged the lands, leaving misery and death in its wake. A group of young people banded together and traveled the world in search of a way to defeat him. They forged friendships, found true love and struggled with the possibility of betrayal in their midst. In six short months, they developed extraordinary strength and skills they did not know they possessed. When they finally met Azazel on the battlefield, they fought with glory and pride. As the hero delivered the mortal blow, the world went quiet, barely daring to breathe. Without their leader, the demon armies retreated back into the night. At last, the world rejoiced.

It has been fifteen years since Azazel fell. The world has changed and its people moved on. Alistair is now trying to live a normal life, tucked away in a small, sleepy village. But a casual visit from an old acquaintance threatens to propel him back into a world of adventure - whether he likes it or not!

Embark on a journey to explore the world and the unique perspective of what happens to said world once the fairytale of might and magic is over.

About the world of Caeta:
The world of Caeta (pronounced SEH- tta)  is comprised of five major continents: Andras, Ahden, Geldion, Vega and the Maia islands. With the exception of Maia, which is a democratic independent republic, the continents are ruled by a  monarchy (diarchy in the case of Andras). Since the appearance and consequent death of Azazel, the world has been living in a time of world peace, and free from political intrigue.

While both modern and futuristic technology can be found in various areas of the world, the majority of the population prefers to live a simpler existence that is in harmony with nature. In the past five years, it's become trendy for licensed mages (or those with magical predilections) to rely heavily on technology. This is largely due to theories that the mana pool of a person is limited and should only be used in the "worst case" scenario. This is a stark difference with the mages from pre-Azazel era, who used magic at all times - even while asleep.

Religion plays a major level in the personal life of some people, but Caeta is primarily henotheistic in nature. Most towns and villages will have one patron deity, but their worship won't be enforced. Patron deities are chosen by the perceived natural blessings of the area where the towns are located. For example, the patron deity of Par Tillian is Damia, goddess of plenty. Even though Par Tillian is located in the hot desert, its citizens are blessed to have a constant source of pure drinking water via the mountains located just north of the town.

It was Alistair's sword that dealt the mortal blow to Azazel. He never truly enjoyed the praise and attention given to the great heroes, thus he spent a few years wandering Caeta before finally settling in a small village on the fringes of civilization.
His idealist and impulsive nature led him into many adventures and sticky situations in the past, but the years have turned him into a more prudent and thoughtful man. Though he never received a formal education, he is intelligent and well-read.
He takes life in moderation, so he is a man without vices.

Cordelia grew up hearing the stories about Azazel's fall and the bravery of Alistair and his companions. Like many of the younger Caeta inhabitants, she hasn't been exposed to harshness or violence in life.
Idealistic and naive, she has a knack of getting herself in trouble. She quickly developed an infatuation with Alistair, after he saved her from a monster. In her eyes, Alistair is a knight in shining armor. Much to her disappointment, Cordelia's sweetness and generosity remind Alistair of Lillian, which has led him to be short-tempered and grouchy around her.

As one of the countless orphaned children, Penelope grew up sheltered by the church. Unlike other children, she developed a fascination with the priest life and requested to join the clergy. She took up her studies with zeal and unorthodox organized discipline. She has a natural predilection for healing magic, though she is most interested in plant-based salves and naturalistic healing.
Penelope values her logic and intellect, often dismissing or ignoring her emotions. She can be counted on as a voice of reason, and follows a strict moral code.
She is originally forced to join Alistair by her matron, Diana. She quickly grows to like and respect him as a leader.

Azazel era was particularly difficult for mages, as they were often easily sensed by the demon armies. As a result, anyone with the potential to tame and use magic was quickly recruited by the academy. During those times of uncertainty and fear, the academy frequently traveled from place to place. This life gave Claudia both the formal education of the academic setting and the multicultural know-how of everyday life. This life also gave her a thirst for adventure, leading to her penchant for chaos and disregard of rules and laws.
Beneath her wild and rebellious exterior, Claudia is a thoughtful and intelligent woman. Her magical potential is very high, but she lacks the discipline needed to excel in her studies. She initially joins Alistair as a way to get good grades effortlessly, but she sticks around for her love of adventure.

I'm still pretty early in, but just a few comments for now! c:

-I really enjoyed the NPC conversations, they felt really natural. Especially in the bar; it really added to the lively atmosphere to have many amusing and realistic npc convos there.

-Beautiful colours! I've always been really "desaturated" with my palettes, but the vibrant graphics here are really nifty.

-Perhaps this is a RPG convention, but some of the stairs' locations between floors seem off. E.g. in the bar, when you head upstairs from a stairway located at the north of the building, you appear on the second floor at a stairway that's at north of the building. I suppose it can make logical sense to consider that the perspective is actually turned 180 degrees on the upper floor map, but it still felt a bit awkward.

-Lol @ the marketing rope giveaway dude.

The dialogues are just very well done in general. c: I'll give more comments as I play through it. Cheers~

It's a nice game until you get stuck in the middle of an event process. xD;

I talked to the crystal transit girl from the side, instead from the bottom, and now since I'm in her way of going completely around the crystal, I'm stuck there. Lol. Guess I'll have to reload.

Argh, wish the demo was longer. :p

That was very well done; the whole playthrough felt quite consistent and flowy. I wasn't too big on VX RTP style, but this actually changed my view on it. The atmosphere was very pleasant throughout. The dialogues were still what I enjoyed most (and lol@ things like "Happy Wife" & "Thoughtful Husband"). Much enjoyed the sense of humor. c:

It was clever to show side-scenes wordlessly with emotes with a screen pan from the main event, which both skips the redundant dialogues explaining what you just did and foreshadows events at the same time. Although, I think for scenes where characters were walking out, the main convo could continue while they move, instead of waiting for those unrelated movements to be finished.

Overall, I had a great time playing it, and was sad when it ended earlier than I thought. How's your progress on it after the demo's finishing point? o:

(And another notable lol @ the plants-savy girl's dialogues.)

It was cute, albeit a little uneventful.
Loved the graphics.

I'm looking forward to next chapters.

@ Reives:
Yay, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It was honestly a lot of fun to make and I was surprised at how quickly I progressed with it. I'm definitely including more humor in the areas to follow. It makes NPCs so much more memorable XD

I'm about half-way done with the next chapter, so you hopefully won't have to wait too long.

I'll see what I can do about the walking out scene. It was buggy when I had the dialogue continue with them walking in the background. Hopefully I'll figure out how to fix it. :3

@Thula:
Uneventful meaning not enough action/exploration? Or the story's boring and without conflict? I admit the story's not the conventional RPG, so it might not suit everyone's tastes. But I hope I can still make it enjoyable.

And thanks for playing!

Ah, nice, looking forward to it!

I think Thula meant mainly a lack of conflicts in general. I kinda felt that too, and now that I think of it it was mainly the little things (and there were many) that kept me interested for a long portion of the demo, rather the the main plot. I did get attached to the main story later on in the demo, but it could definitely come sooner. Perhaps a bit more foreshadowing/flashbacks in the beginning could go a long way with the main story.

Uneventful in the sense that nothing impactful occourred yet, it was a very calm progression.
Usually the first chapter/s are the ones that set the mood for the story, so there's something that catches you into wanting to know more about what just happened etc.
But yeah, every story it's unique, and the storytelling is even more.
It was enjoyable nonetheless, the characters had a nice interaction and where far from clichè. As I said, I'm anticipating the nexts chapter to see how events pick up and develop ^^

It's so hard to talk about the project without revealing major plot twists!  :seraisweat:

But, I will say that Chapter 1 (which is what's available for download) is more like a prologue - or even a very long-winded introduction. There will be a lot more action in the next chapters. I may or may not rework this first chapter sometime in the future :)

I remade a couple maps in chapter 1, so a new download for the complete chapter 1 is available. There is one extra puzzle, but not much is different from the original version. You're welcome to download it!

Chapter 2 is coming along great and should be complete in just a couple of weeks (if everything goes right, that is!)

:< I'm cursed with downloads that never work for me...
The one in the OP doesn't work, the one in the other post kinda does...it gets stuck on "Processing download" forever...although I feel this is a Mediafire error and not on your part, have you uploaded it anywhere else? And does anyone know what causes this sort of thing so I can remedy it?

It looks really nice, looks like I came just in time (because by the time I finish it a new chapter will come up ^^).

Reives was gracious enough to let me upload my project to his host (yay Reives!), but I cannot, for the life of me, make it work. I'm hoping for a big fat Christmas bonus this year, so I can purchase my own hosting.

I will keep trying, though. And worse comes to worst, I'll find another free host to upload to. I promise to get to it before too long~!

Ahaha! I loved Thomas the insane gardener! However, I didn't kill more than one flower; the storyline flower. That jerk. How dare he laugh at me!

Errors I found:

When I found Cordelia being attacked by the bug, I must have walked right around the event. I kept talking to the bug and the girl and nothing would happen. Then as I walked away Alistair turned and slapped the hornet with his blade of justice.

In the Sparrowight Academy, on the first floor, in the top right-hand corner with the piano, you can walk through the lower wall. The same in the top leftmost room.

That was pretty interesting, Lunarea! I love the concept of what old heroes.

Ah, yes, good ol' Thomas ... I swear, I'm going to have to make an extra long quest chain for him. He seems to be a favorite.

Thank you for the error reports! It's funny how I go to change one thing and it messes up 10 others. I did fix it, and I'm uploading the new version as we speak.

I'm very glad you enjoyed it!

The river bridge puzzle doesn't work, you can't walk over the board, you can get easly trapped between the boxes, you can moves the board pushing the boxes even if the latters are agains a wall, and you can move the boards even over land.
Title: Re: Twice Upon A Hero
Post by: Lunarea on December 05, 2010, 12:21:34 AM
You can't walk over the boards until the bridge is complete, because there's no point trying to cross if you can't get to the other side.

Can you please take a screenshot of being trapped between the boxes? I'm afraid I can't replicate it.

I will try to fix up the boards on land and the wall movement issue.

I didn't anticipate anyone having that much trouble with the puzzle, though. ?None of my testers caught any of these issues either. But thanks for the report.
Title: Re: Twice Upon A Hero
Post by: Merlandese on December 05, 2010, 12:30:01 AM
@ Malvodian: Yeah, probably not the most complicated or best executed puzzle, but at least there is the reset sparkle to fix many of those mistakes. And did you actually get stuck in the boxes? To where you can't move? How did that happen? O.o

@ Lunarea: I thought I might also add that the generic battle for those games are somewhat annoying, and take me out of the immersion more than the immersion destroying hint fairy (I loved that fairy, by the way). I don't think I would suggest taking out conflicts, especially if it becomes super important; and I don't think you would want to spend a million years planning out a more unique battle system. My suggestion would be quick puzzles or mini-games to replace battles--representing them--unless fighting and level grinding is something you absolutely want in that game. Or maybe you can just keep it underplayed, whereas there are only boss/story-related battles that aren't really hard to win, but still show that a conflict is taking place.

Personally, I enjoyed what you created, but I think that battles aren't necessary for a good gaming experience and should be tossed if the player thinks "Damn, now I have to battle?" or "Argh! A boss fight? Why do I have to level grind just to get to the next bit of juicy story?" Even though Thomas warned me not to kill all of the flowers, the only reason I didn't fight any of them was because I didn't like the battle system.

It was definitely supposed to be a rather simple puzzle and while I can fix all the issues save for getting stuck (since I have no idea how to make that happen), it's going to involve a lot of extra coding that I was hoping to avoid. But, since I don't want to do a half-arsed job, I will sit down and fix it up as soon as I can.

I'm torn on the subject of battles - and that's mainly the reason I've barely touched the battle system. Since so much of it is relying on the traditional RPG conventions, it only makes sense that there are battles. It sounded weird to take them out altogether. But I also much prefer puzzles or mini-games myself.

The few fights you have in there (two flowers, bee, imp in the sewers) are pretty much boss fights and a couple of Savior casts kills them all quickly. I haven't included any other fights, really. Not just because I'm not sure whether there will be battles or not, but also because it's not my forte. Some people love all the balancing of numbers and stats and whatnot. I most definitely don't.

I love the balancing of numbers and complex or intriguing battles systems, which is why I prefer all-or-nothing when it comes to that. I would rather have no battles than poor/generic ones that are thrown in just because there "ought to be" battles. But I may be the minority in your feedback, so don't get too stressed about it. What little fighting you had wasn't distracting. And what's this about a sewer imp? I saw no such thing! :p

It will probably come down to whether I can find someone to team up with for that part of the game or whether I can manage to not let all the numbers get me dizzy. I admit, I was a bit of a procrastinator and leaving the battles until later - or rather, until I came up with some cool idea on how to do them.

There was an itsy bitsy side quest given to you by the girl standing in front of the well in Summervale. However, the only time you could get it is when Cordelia is in your party - which is only after you come back from the forest, but before you go to Sparrowight. Easily missed first time around, but you do come back to Summervale later and you can explore at your leisure.

Finally got this downloaded.  :D  :D  :D
Although I also have an issue with the bridge puzzle...
there's very clearly 4 bridge pieces all lined up fromm riverbank to riverbank...yet the game doesn't allow me to get on them...?

Edit:
Well, I got it...after a bit of rearranging...apparently it's picky abou the order of boxes or something?  ::)
The game's a lot of fun so far. I recognize quite a few of the songs... And the forest is absolutely gorgeous.
I like the absense of treasure chests, people giving you stuff instead...seriously, some people just stand by and watch while you rob them in games!

@Lunarea: It's because I always try to find all the bugs so they get fixed quickly. You should make it possible to build the bridge in any order of the boxes, or you could put them numbers.

@Merlandese: You can get stuck if you put all the boxes in the first collumn, or atleast you could get stuck if you wasnt able to move the boxes outside the gray floor.

Eh, the only bug besides the one that's been pointed out I found was that the Guard's Note is a consumable item, and apparently you need it to finish the quest.

I never saw Thomas the gardener...except with the letter...Am I missing something?

@ Malvodion:
I really appreciate that you take the time to actively seek out any bugs or issues. But it's ok to just play a game for enjoyment.

@ silversun:
It's very much a learning experience for me. How a player approaches something might be completely different than how I would approach it as a designer - especially when I know the solution beforehand.

You didn't miss out on Thomas, the gardener. I think everyone is just amused by the board in the eastern forest, as you get to see a bit of his craziness come through.

Hopefully, I'm not breaking rules by double-posting, but I've just uploaded a new version with a fixed puzzle and a couple minor mistakes that were caught by all you clever players.

Please let me know if you encounter any other errors!

~Chapter 2~

- I've added several new scripts, so your old save will not work. Sorry 'bout that! The good news is that I don't anticipate adding any more scripts, so your saves should be good from this point on. And should I ever go back on my word here, I will most definitely provide save files for your convenience.
- The lengthy introduction is now skip-able.
- The music has been changed. As much as I love the old-school midi sound, all the orchestral custom pieces made the midi sound pretty flat. And since I've already broken the 128mb resource rule, there was no other reason to keep the midi format.
- The size has gone up to 224mb. I wish I could promise that it won't go much higher than that, but it will. Hopefully, I can still keep it a reasonable size ...
- The battle system is not done. I'm currently working on the skills and spells for the characters and monsters. The scripts I will be using, however, are in. So, while the battles are same old n' boring, they should give you an idea of how the battles will flow.
- Because a lot of people missed it, I have put an arrow above the quest giver's head in Summervale. She is only available while you have Cordelia in your party, so you have to do the side quest after getting the nectar, but before turning it in. Or, you can skip it altogether and wait for the next time Alistair is in the area.
- To my knowledge, the chapter is bug-free. If you do encounter a game-breaking bug, do let me know. Same for any passability errors or typos.
- Special thanks to Reives for hosting my project, and also to Zeriab for releasing the encryption tool that allowed me to compress my game data smoothly.

Have fun~!

Okay. I'm stuck. |: I've spent over half an hour trying to figure out just which switches are supposed to turn this track corner:

Title: Re: Twice Upon A Hero
Post by: Lunarea on February 10, 2011, 06:58:16 PM
Oh, that one was tricky, I admit.

Hint: You have to back-track for one of the switches.
Also, if you talk to the hint fairy and hit "easy mode", it will save your progress after every stop, so you won't have to keep restarting from the beginning.

And, if all else fails, here's the solution:
Spoiler: show
You can hit the green & red switches on the left + the red switch on the right all at once before moving the cart. Then, after the cart is at the spot where you're stuck, go back and hit the green switch on the right.

:)

I could've sworn I hit those exact same switches at least a couple times when running back and forth to check, but never saw the track switch to a corner piece. I guess I'll try again.

Definitely going in my to-fix list.

I'm glad you're enjoying it, talia!

So, everything is complete under the "Burgunda Port" quest in the quest log, and you have a boat ticket?

Here's a detailed list of what you need to do in the town:
Spoiler: show

At the magic store: Talk to the lady behind the counter.
At the item store: Talk to the lady behind the counter &
Talk to the girl by the dress.
At the tavern: Talk to the older lady near the sign at the entrance to pay your rent &
Talk to the maid near the stairs &
Talk to the blue-haired guy and accept his quest.
At the shipping office: Talk to the girl in front of the counter to buy a ticket.

Let me know if you've already done all of these and still can't leave the town.

in the summerville town we have a sewer quest.
I did that quest when hero was alone...he was going to rest at the inn.
so the girls were not in my party.

if girls are not with you...how can they heal Mr. soldier.

Right now, I'm finishing up the battle system and fixing up a couple of the errors people pointed out in chapters 1 and 2. Thankfully, they're all things that need to be done once and I can tweak them some more after new content.

It's tough to really estimate how long chapter 3 will take, especially since I'm not sure how busy I'm going to be. But I'm making TUAH my priority and I'm working on it in any spare moments I have.

I can tell you that I probably won't have it done before mid-april (4 weeks). I'll try to have April 15th as a tentative date and I'll be sure to keep you guys updated! I have a blog account I've been neglecting, so I'm probably going to try and turn it into a game-developing blog.

Revised Chapters 1&2

Download Here (http://freebirdgames.com/Lunarea/TUAHv2_5.rar)

There have been quite a bit of changes in the revision!

Cosmetic changes:
- Custom windowskin
- New Font(please be sure to install it from the Font folder!)
- Overhaul of the menu and message systems
- Slight changes in sprites to make them a bit more unique
- Remapped:
Sewers under Summervale
CTN tech area
Gullad Mountains (inside)

Gameplay changes:
- Skippable introduction, and ability to fast-forward text by holding down the Shift button.
- New battle system
- New and improved skill/spells
- Emergence of random encounters, and ability to toggle them on/off
- Basic tutorials for menu, quest and battle
- Complete redesign of inner Gullad Mountains, including new puzzles
- Added a new quest that can be picked up in Summervale while Claudia is in your party.

Bug fixes:
- You can no longer access sewers unless you're on the side-quest.
- You can't get the boulder stuck inside the corridor of Bethlam Tower F3
- Eventing on first chest in Bethlam tower B2 changed slightly
- Fixed a few spelling/grammar mistakes.

The story and most of the events are identical to the previous version. Though I would be very thankful if you played through the new version, it's completely understandable if you would rather wait for new content. With the release of chapter 3 (and thereon, should the need arise), I will be providing a generic save file that would allow you to access new content without having to replay the old.

You may have noticed that the size of the download is larger than the previous version. There are quite a few files in there that are in preparation for chapter 3. I don't estimate any future gigantic jumps in size, but I can try to package the audio files separately for easier download management.

Thank you, and enjoy playing!

Cool, congratz on the release Luna! Downloading now.

Although, yeah, the size is starting to concern me -- once you get past 100 - 200 mb, the effect on # of downloads is quite stark. What's taking up so much space?
Title: Re: Twice Upon A Hero
Post by: Merlandese on April 09, 2011, 03:00:03 PM
I didn't even notice the update! I'll have to play it soon. And how big is a normal game? I didn't think people cared too much how big the files were when it came to games. Maybe I'm too much of a console gamer to take these things into account.
Title: Re: Twice Upon A Hero
Post by: Reives on April 09, 2011, 05:18:44 PM
If it came on a disk, it doesn't really matter much. But for downloading, especially since many of the audiences for games like this (Amaranthia, Freebird etc.) are casual gamers, downloading a game they aren't yet familiar with that's 300MB takes much more persuading than a file that's <100MB.
Title: Re: Twice Upon A Hero
Post by: Merlandese on April 09, 2011, 05:49:14 PM
And here I thought size didn't matter. :p That's good to know, though, Reives.
Title: Re: Twice Upon A Hero
Post by: Lunarea on April 09, 2011, 11:19:41 PM
I also didn't think size matters, or at least I've been assured that it doesn't. It was one of the first questions I've asked before I started working on specific graphics and choosing the right audio tracks.

The current download contains almost all of the graphics for the game (save for parallaxes and maps not yet created). They're not all used right now, but they will be eventually. So, audio files aside, I imagine the size wouldn't change drastically from this point on.

I haven't gone in and deleted the unused files, but I certainly can if the download size is an issue. I will also probably be splitting up the audio into a separate download, so it's more manageable.

Edit: I'm also pondering the idea of adding a short demo-ish download for those people who want to try it out, but not download a giant thing at once.

Edit 2: Also, thank you to all of you who donwloaded and are giving it a try! If any of you have comments or criticism on the battle system, I would love to hear it. It was one of the weakest points before, and I hope I've managed to produce something a bit more entertaining now.

There seems to be a game-stopping bug inside the mines, where a lilypad is moving in a square pattern, and the player needs to step on it to be transported. The bug was that for some reason, the lilypad's position got reseted to its spawn point like 0.1 seconds after the map's loaded and it started moving (upwards). The result was that it was always one square lower than where it's supposed to be, and the player can't step onto it to get past the place. D:

Didn't seem to happen to the others though, so hm. I tried reloading and it still happened. Anyway to get around that? Aside from it, everything's been great so far -- I'll save commenting on the details after I finish. c: Nice job Luna.

I've had one other person report this, too, but I'm unable to reproduce it. It's one of those "works fine 99% of time, but it bugs for that 1%" thing.  D:

You can link your save file and I can get you past that point, if you'd like :3

I've changed the puzzle for the new release, so it's a hopping puzzle like in the second room. It will be added in the next chapter.
