Introduction

The Beyond is a freeware survival horror/adventure game created with RPG Maker VX. It is a psuedo sequel to the game One Night, however the story and locations are unrelated to the previous game and this game serves as a stand alone game.
The Beyond is not a normal RPG Maker game. In The Beyond, you find yourself trapped in a "haunted" mansion known as The Beyond, and are soon under attack by a strange, and evil power. Using your brain and your reflexes, you must think and fight your way to safety, solving puzzles and defeating horrifying enemies to make your escape.
In order to escape the terror, you'll first need to understand the cause of the nightmare. Make sure you collect all the clues so that you can understand the fate that has befallen the mansion. But, be careful. You are always in danger, and it is easy to let the fear overwhelm you. Don't give in to the evil.

Story Outline

Mairstone Manor

Also known as The Beyond, this mansion was built in the early 1950's by renowned ex military general and historian Thomas Mairstone.
It is situated in the rural coal mining town of Black Valley in the isolated midwest. The entire town is isolated, being situated in a remote valley, and sorrounded by acres of dense forest. The locals fear The Beyond, and blame it for several disapearances of townspeople, including the mansion's owners, and bizarre phenomena that has been recently occuring in town.

Black Valley

An isolated midwestern mining town founded in the mid 1800's. The town's mining industry has been inactive since the 1920's due to the mines being closed for an undisclosed reason. Black Valley has a population of only 300, only a small fraction of the 1200 people it housed during the mining era.
Reportedly, Black Valley is a center for paranormal activity, with many bizarre incidents being reported each month.

Characters

Two playable characters are featured in The Beyond, each one playing in a different way and having their own unique reasons for being drawn into the mansion. Each character also has their own unique endings. To see all of the game's endings, you'll need to play through as both characters!

John Faraday

An ex police officer turned private detective. John has been hired to investigate the mysterious disapearance of a group of journalists conducting research on the mansion. John has decided to search for clues in the last place the group were known to have visited, and so heads for The Beyond itself.

Sara Wickson

A horror fiction writer seeking inspiration. It's been a while since Sara wrote a big top seller, so in order to gather material to write her next novel, Sara has decided to spend a night in the infamous mansion known as The Beyond.

Game Features

> True fear will take over as you explore the mansion, uncovering the many secrets it holds. Atmospheric graphics and sounds, combined with some genuine psychological engineering will make you feel the ultimate terror.

> A fantastic challenge awaits you, with fiendish puzzles to solve, horrifying enemies to defeat, and two different characters and four endings to experience.

> Streamlined systems such as a health indicator and custom item usage system help you keep track of notes, clues and items.

> Rivetting, tense combat, using the completely customized Decision Proximity Semi Active Battle system (DPSAB) which allows enemies to deal damage based on the direction they strike from, and allows actions performed outside of battle to affect your battle performance.

Made by Dark Gaia in HBGames.org (I think it might've been RMXP.org before)

No classic pop-up scares, but some elements from the Q-TBV haunted house exist (like the mysterious running figure, except a lot scarier). God, everytime something appears, my heart misses a beat >_>

Oh yeah, and despite it having a lot of RMXP graphics, it's an RMVX game

As much a thrill I get from scary movies/games, I think it's best I not play this during the night. e_e; I'll leave it for when I get home from class tomorrow..

Edit: I laughed when I found this on another "The Beyond" thread:

(The guys from beyond the wall, when they come out, they make a loud noise that makes me jump each time ._. it's not like the one in Quintessence, where you hear a whoosh :O)

I almost got heart attack when i go to park, so i stop play for moment >_>

@Kirroha:
Spoiler: show
The answers are in the "Mixing List" note. The number of servings
each mix yields represents which lock the number will unlock.
For example, "Serves 2" indicates the answer is for the second
lock.
To get the answer, simply add the mixing quantities together, and
input the resulting numbers in the right order into the locks.

So... The correct answer is to input 359, then 503, then 437.

Huh, looks interesting.  Giving it a try now.

EDIT: Silent Hill sound effects, that's a good sign for me.

EDIT2: Needs to jump out and say 'boo' less.  But at least it jumps out and says 'boo' with some class...

It seems kind of like the original Alone in the Dark... in a lot of ways, now that I think about it.

I have light on and it minimized, and I still can't play for too long. How long is this game, does anyone know?
Title: Re: The Beyond
Post by: Rayen on October 11, 2009, 08:53:12 PM
More than half an hour. Depends on how quickly you figure out the puzzles and fight the monsters. I haven't finished it, yet. I forgot where the door for this one key is.
Title: Re: The Beyond
Post by: mepwnn on October 11, 2009, 09:01:20 PM
Which door?
Title: Re: The Beyond
Post by: Vasha on October 11, 2009, 09:03:00 PM
Yeah, I can't help you at all cuz i haven't finished either, but 'a key to a door' is kind of vague, especially in a game like that
Title: Re: The Beyond
Post by: Rayen on October 11, 2009, 09:16:25 PM
Thought it was obvious that I didn't remember. <<;

Well, nevermind. It was the "Ornate Key" that opened the Control Room. Past that now. I'm playing as Sara, with 1 monster left to fight, and seemingly no medical kits left. !@#$.

I used 2 kits in my replay. It's because I saved too many times (24, apparently).

Yeah, your heart WILL JUMP multiple times. My brother didn't even get that far and he chickened out :P At least I got to the Hanged Man, he already got scared at the falling bottle >_> That's the lamest scare in the entire game...
Title: Re: The Beyond

Ah, i got the hanged man too (and dead journalist, but luckily she IS dead  :P )

All the "boo"s are jumpy and lame. Sure, they made my heart jump, but I'm in for the psychological horror, not lame BOOBOOBOO scares.

I'm playing to see the bad ending for John. It sounds awesome.

I'm downloading it right now. Sounds like something I'd enjoy, because I love horror stories. Obviously, I won't be playing until tonight, because whenever I play a horror game I have to go all-out.

This is sort of how I feel.  I'm hoping it shapes up, because there's a real difference between a shock and a scare.  I like puzzles, so I'm having fun anyway, but I haven't seen anything disturbing so far, really.
Title: Re: The Beyond
Post by: Kirroha on October 13, 2009, 03:49:59 AM
@Val: Yup, you got it. This game wasn't the least scary. It only has shocks that happen very often. I don't like shocks at all, only scares. Scares are what makes me afraid to sleep. Shock wears away immediately.

I mean, I can go behind you and yell "BOO!" and you will jump, but will you think it's scary and not dare sleep for a week?

I ended up trying this last night, and I was enjoying it until I got completely stuck:I found the wrench in the Library, but i didn't know where to use it, and I had no other story items I hadn't used. I'm hoping to figure this out soon, because as I said, I'm enjoying the game, and I'm perfectly fine with all the boo! moments, plus I'm loving the sound effects.

I don't know how to shoot down the library. I clicked on the revolver and it doesn't work.
Title: Re: The Beyond
Post by: Rayen on October 13, 2009, 09:31:58 PM
You need a key to open the Library door. Inside, there's another door that you need to shoot open with the loaded revolver.
Title: Re: The Beyond

So does anyone know what you're supposed to do right after the library? Because I searched the entire place, and I'm still stuck.

After you get the wrench, you use it at the well.
Title: Re: The Beyond
Post by: Coach Travis on October 13, 2009, 11:22:03 PM
Thanks.  And to help Akizuka Kirroha:First, make sure you have the library key to enter the library(you get the key by using the music sheet on the piano). Then, you need a bullet(can't remember where to get it), you need to examine the other door in the library, then enter the menu, select the bullet, and that will load the revolver. After that, the revolver will blow up the door for you.
Title: Re: The Beyond
Post by: Kirroha on October 14, 2009, 02:32:16 AM
Yup, I know. I played the piano. Anyway, I have to say this game did not meet my expectations, especially how rushed the ending is, and how it isn't really scary at all in the first place. Also, most puzzles are maths questions, and I'm not playing a horror game to improve my math. Also, it's basically just to grab all shiny items and use the shiny items to gain access to more shiny items, etc. The backplot is boring and cliche'd as well.

Everything's more of a "BOO! Haunted House" than anything else. But since I've only seen one ending (very Narmy one, where the sound effects of John slashing people sound more like metal hitting metal than anything else. Not atmospheric enough), so maybe I can try again. Who knows.

Anyway, I've always liked seeing bad ends first because they have the most potential to be made into emotional scenes. But most games just seem to concentrate much more on the good endings. I am never interested in them.

This may or may not be related, but when I went to the RRR forums, Team Gaia is apparently off the featured projects...whatever it's called forums? Or am I just blind?
I'm a bit concerned because I've gotten into Legionwood, another title by the same creator...and the last update was at a cliffhanger, they can't stop now!  D:
