When did he say he'd rather be dead?

When Eva confronts him about the painkillers... sort of.

"Neil... you aren't addicted, are you?"

"Are you kidding me? I'd overdose before I'd sink to that level of contrived mess."

Here's something I don't think anyone has brought up yet, how do we know these are Painkillers, instead of say them being something else but they're being kept in a Painkiller bottle?
Because nothing points to the probability that they weren't painkillers?

Has anyone brought up the idea that the red flash at the end could signify doctors looking through his memories?
When Neil and Eva were in Johnny's memories a red flash would signify Johnny's pain, so the same could be said for Neil.

Perhaps Eva's looking through Neil's memories to find out how his pill addiction started?

I only had the idea because I didn't find out about the painkillers until my third play through.  :platquack:

Most addicted people claim that they are not.

Like GLaDOS with her testing euphoria.

Or Chell and her overeating?
Old River was as dead as a doornail, this must be distinctly understood or nothing wonderful can come of the story I am about to relate.

I'm pretty sure it happens on the way back to the house, as long as you've picked up the bottle of painkillers from the car.

Yes, if you pick up the bottle of painkillers after getting the roadkill, you run into Neil while heading back to the house. That's where it takes place.

Reives obviously intended the painkillers to be a cliffhanger to be explored further in later episodes.
Although I have a theory on where they'll lead:

I thought the same theory that maybe this was all in Neils memory, and maybe Eva is looking through his memories? Could go way out there and guess that maybe Eva feels responsible or a bit guilty for Neils current state (Being addicted to painkillers, or having some sort of serious illness) as I remember one part she said something along the lines of "What would of happened to you if I didn't help you cheat on that test?" Maybe she didn't and shes giving him the memories of what his life would have been like if he was a doctor.

Kinda hard riffing from the top of my head, but it's almost an understandable theory!

I know I'm late to the metaphorical party, but if Neil dies...

I figure they might make another episode focused on Neil/Eva. It would be good if it was done right, but If Neil died, I think many people would just turn off their computers and hide for about a week before coming back to check these forums.
